2001 Excursion 7.3 transfer case fluid
« on: April 20, 2021, 04:44:09 PM »
The seal from my transmission to transfer case is broken and leaking. How bad is this if I keep adding transmission fluid Mercon V.  What is recommended transfer case fluid to use? Thank you! Some people saying mercon Ford says motorcraft xl-12. But assuming I’m leaking tranny fluid into transfer case what should I be topping off with in tranny? When I pull check plug on transfer case tranny fluid is pouring out.

Leaks do not get better with time and miles, at some point it will eat the trans and maybe the transfer case as well.  :twocents:

I’m on a limited budget and need my truck. What kind of tranny fluid should I be topping off with assuming it’s leaking into transfer case?

Whetever works in the transmission will work in the transfer case, transfer case is not as picky as the transmission.

From a trusted X-Ford Transmission engineer.

"You may use either conventional or synthetic ATF, as long as it is rated MERCON or MERCON V. Your Owner’s Guide says to not use MERCON V, but Ford changed that in 2006."

Mercon V in the transmission or the t case.

Or LV.
