Help repairing MinnKota Endura trolling motor
« on: April 22, 2021, 12:40:35 AM »
So I have had some problems with my trolling motor for the second half of last summer, then the only day I got out duck hunting in the fall it wouldnt work. It would turn but super slow. On the 5th speed the prop would make 1 revolution in like 3 seconds.
It is a 50lbs thrust endura transom mount.
When the problems started I could jiggle the motor and it would sometimes kick up and go.
I did have a couple bad trips as far as the motor taking a beating on hitting objects and broke a shear pin for the first time ever in a trolling motor.
I opened up the lower unit and it had brown rusty water in it. Looks like it had water in it for a bit. The paper/cardboard ring thing by the brushes was soaked and shredded.
I found an entire assembled lower unit for $160 ish. But if I buy all the internal parts and seals to overhaul it I can keep it at about $100.
I am just not sure. The process seems pretty straight forward. But I dont know if I am going overboard, if really its only a few specific parts I would need. And the process for some of the seals I dont want to screw up.
Does anyone have any tips or insight into this? Worked on them before?
Is there a way I can test to see if some parts need replaced or not?

It's probably not worth the effort.  A new Minn Kota Endura C2 50lb is about $220.  You could try cleaning everything up and installing a new brush and seal kit.  Most likely that would fix it; but you never know for sure.

I've refurbished a couple of Minn Kota trolling motors before. If you cleaned up the lower end and it's still giving you fits I'd recommend the same as CP, just get a new one. It probably will never run quite right again. You can sell the old one for parts to make up some of the cost.

Thanks for the replies. I was wondering about just replacing it.
Also thought about buying one of the smaller 30 lb thrust ones. Thats what I had before and it worked. Did the job and a little easier to manage size wise on the boat. The 50 was just a lot nicer in wind, going low and slow, and getting through the lily pads.
But if I got a 30, I could spend $100 and then tinker with my current 50 in my spare time.
