Made a new trap
« on: May 13, 2021, 11:08:35 AM »
Hay wanted to see if I can get a lil critique from y'all cage trappers on this trap I put together. Built it out if scrap panel so it's a little mismatched but seems to work just fine. It's double doored goullitine gates, each has a independent lock and it's runs off of a wire trigger. Trap is made out of 10ga ( I think) horse panel, trigger components are 1/4" cold roll ( as far as the trigger mech arms and trow bars / tabs). Doors are framed with 1/2" cold roll. Slides gate channels are 1x1x1/8" angle. Made it for trail set more than anything. Still need to add the staking rigs to the out side and tweak another thing or two though
So what do y'all think ?

Assuming it is made for cat, coyote, beaver, otter I think it is too short, 17 inches into the trap when they trigger it with a guillotine door I think they are likely to hold the door open with their back and back out.
I know a theory has it that if an animal gets hit on the butt they will jump forward. Could be but  17 inches  I think it will drop on the middle of their back. They need to be in a little further IMO.
Could work if there is a lot of play in the trigger and they get past halfway before it springs. :dunno:

just coon, possum and grey fox really. Reason I made it so shot was because it was made of scraps. Didn't really have enought to make a full size trap

I have one with spring loaded doors and a coin trigger that’s 48” long ,you set both doors or singular and I’ve had succes where otters have gone into crawl spaces so it’s basically like a comstock but bigger and I can use it on bobcats with just a single door

My double door beaver, otter, cat traps are 40" long, never a problem. I make the shorties for beaver and otter at 32" ling. All those have the inward opening doors. Guillotine doors are a different matter though. I believe the trap would have to be longer with guillotine doors.

I'm not sure what size your possum are but I would think most would slip out of 4x4 mesh. Maybe that is a good thing> :chuckle:

2x4" actually, never had much of a problem holding smaller critters with it in other traps  :)
