This will be my first year going full on for a bear. I am going to hunt and fish near Tonasket. What is the best way to cool your bear down the fastest way. I read about guys hiking miles in. Would one be concerned packing bear meat out that distance? I am continually being told how quickly it can spoil in the heat.

If hunting near a creek you can bone it out and put it in your game bag then put it in a hefty bag and drop it in the creek for a while to cool the meat.

To me the biggest thing is getting the hide off ASAP, and I usually pull/trim the bigger chunks of fat off.  Hang in a game bag, letting air circulate on as much surface area as possible (don't overfill bags). Hang in shade when possible while you work on the rest. Not always available within a reasonable distance, but a shaded draw with water is usually much cooler than temps mid slope and higher.  Meat care for bear is essentially the same as other animals, but with their fat content they seem to spoil quicker.

Trying a new area this year, will be up in the Sherman pass area. Spent the 31st doing some scouting and then see if we can’t find something on the 1st. Might wind up just being a scouting trip to make a better plan for a longer hunt at the end of the month but that’s ok and who knows we might just get lucky.

I'll be out with both daughter's this year.  6 bear tags to fill shouldn't take more than a few weeks.

I like the idea of shooting an early bear but their coats are so much prettier if we wait until September. That precious bear fat is definitely better and more abundant in late Sept - Oct too!
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

Bear is closed in Idaho in August.  I'll be yachting, waiting for 8/30 elk to open up!

Plan on hunting the coast. Went up today above Rainier (4500’) and no berries of any type. Saw berries down lower(1500-2500) so that’s where I’m focusing.

No clue now that Hillary shut me out of my hunting spots. Might try FS with all the other people that will be forced to hunt on top of each other. But most of it is too high for berries to be ripe so probably no bears anyways

Would I pay $222.50 to shoot a spot/stalk bear in WA.... nawwwww

Thanks for the invite.  I do miss hauling out my bears with you.  :chuckle:

And, you've been doing much better without me.

Yea, she needs to start shooting lighter animals.  My knees don't like her heavy ones :chuckle:
