New to Vancouver Bowhunter - Looking for Advice on Deer and Elk
« on: September 26, 2021, 11:43:40 AM »
Hello Everybody,

First, what a great forum, I'm so glad I found this. I recently moved to Vancouver and am trying to figure out how to get some deer and elk opportunities. I have hunted in several other states, including my first ever elk hunt in Montana this year.

I did some evening deer hunts in unit 568 on some Weyerhaeuser land (the Yacolt permit area). I only had a non-motorized permit and I was the only non-motorized hunter I saw out there. I saw several people in trucks driving around - not quite sure how that works with archery hunting. In any case, I saw a few deer, but no shot opportunities. I heard one elk bugle, but am not sure if it was real or another hunter. The elevation was only 2,000 feet, but I really don't know where the elk are in Western WA and I saw no other elk sign.

So right now, it's tag soup unless I figure out where to go in late archery (in a different unit, I think). I would appreciate any advice on where to go in 364 for late archery and in general, for next season where in 368 for deer and elk. Not honey holes or any special spots you've earned via scouting, but just general ideas.

Is the Yacolt permit area decent or are there better Weyerhaeuser areas? And do you basically need a motorized permit to really have a good chance?

Loving the Vancouver and Western Washington areas so far. Thanks!

Let's have a beer.
