budget build project

there was a thread on another site a  year or so ago that i thought was kind of fun, the guy was going to take everybody's input and build a rifle with what everybody thought was the best parts and pieces.
i don't have that kind of money...but i have a rifle that needs some work.
what i have is a savage model 10 pre-accutrigger. it's a youth model, and eventually the gun will go to my kid, and i'll put the youth stock back on it. until then, and it will be a while, i'm gonna use it. the gun is in good shape as far as the blueing goes and stuff.
for starters i need a stock. this thread is titled budget build, so mcmillan stocks are unfortunately out of the question. get the idea? the rifle has weaver style bases on it, so i'll need some rings and a scope to go on it. it has iron sights. eventually depending on the budget, maybe i'll rebarrel it, but for now, we're rolling with the standard barrel. it's 22" and 1:9.25 twist. i'm also into trigger work and whatever else fits the budget. i have never done anything other than factory rifles, so take it easy on me and give me some ideas.

check this place out, they have a number of things to offer for the Savage rifle including triggers, barrels, scope mounts, etc. I don't know too much about them I came across them about a year ago while looking for T/C parts and I have dealt with them for that purpose. they treated me right or I wouldn't be giving out their info. also note that the price for an installed barrel is only $30 more than a barrel sent to you. I realize you would have to pay for shipping them your action and probably pay an FFL to handle the shipping but only 30 bucks?!

Savages are the easiest to custom build and get addictive so be careful. I have 2 Savages that I change barrels and stocks on . After the first one you can do one in 15 minutes .

Northlander has Savage Take Off Stocks and Barrels as well as other parts Cheaper than anyone else . For triggers, I would check out rifle basix http://www.riflebasix.com/ . I put one of their triggers on my Marlin .17hmr and it is sweet. I also plan on getting one of their triggers for my .270 by next deer season.

I may have a scope to part with...I've been wanting a new scope myself and this may be a good excuse for me to get a new one. It is a Simmons Aetec in 2.8-10x44 and silver finish. I have had it on my .300 win-mag and I also have the same scope on my .270. They work great, but I've been looking to upgrade for a while now. Let me know if you would be interested.

Now get a trigger from Sharp Shooter Supply and you will have a tack driver. SSS triggers are made exclusively for Savage rifles.

thanks slenk...your guy never got back to me on the stock, but i still would like to see what he has.
the trigger is next. SSS sounds like a good way to go. the rifle basix triggers look good too, but the SSS is cheaper.

Have you tried adjusting your Factory trigger yet? I have 2 rifles that have the old style trigger that I have down to 2 3/4# . Just by changing the spring and adjusting the screw that the spring set in. If you want to try this find some .040 Piano wire and bend a new spring . Just make sure you leave a little tention on the spring when you are done adjusting the screw . The factory triggers generally smooth up with use  .I have to check I had a sight on 6mmBR I think ,that shows how to do this . Nope this is where it is

Jack- I finished up a .257 bob for my son. I got the action from a 30-06, put on an Adams & bennet barrel, a new recoil lug, Added a Bell & carlson stock and glass bed it. It shoots great.
Now to find a nice load for it..............Oh, am going to put on a SSS trigger soon.

Looking to build a .25 WSM on a Savage in the future.

slenk...i haven't done anything with it yet...at all. haven't touched it. i woul dloveto mess with the trigger. i'm a little timid about messing with stuff i don't really know what i'm messing with, but with instructions, it might work. worst case i buy  a new trigger if i hose it up. i was planning on doing it anyway.

arrowflinger...this will be fun. i'm obviously new to anything like this...it's not really like i'm building some high tech custom rifle...but it will be cool anyway. i'm gonna take pics along the way of the rifle and the targets, see what little improvements change what. eventually will pass it down to my daughter if she wants it and maybe she can kill her first deer with it or something.
i appreciate all the input and advice from you guys who know this stuff better than me.

After the rifle was done, I took it to MT and shot 2 Whitetail does with it............just to let my son know that the gun does shoot........that way we can't blame it on the rifle. HaHaHaHa

My next Savage build is going to be a .35Whelen or 338-06 . Have the action & stock . Just need to save my pennies to get the barrel .
Will do my own trigger work . A new barrel is about $140 at midway . All it takes is a $42 Barrel nut wrench a home made action vise and a full lenghted brass for headspace gage. And we're good to go.

i like the cartriges that have the 338 moving around, like the 338 federal and stuff. a 338 06 would be killer.
