Confusing dog command?
« on: December 05, 2021, 08:39:54 PM »
Hey all I’m getting back into upland hunting after several years with my first pointer
A French Brittany.
He’s 9 months old heels great he changes directions quartering with a Hey Hey and recalls back to heel with just the vibrate on his collar and I use the command of OK to release him.
My question is if I’m using ok to let him go do I need to use fetch for him to fetch up his bumper or bird or just saying ok does that confuse them about what you want? Meaning to say ok to start hunting or fetch to pickup?
We won’t be doing any waterfowl hunting out of blinds and not doing any blind retrieves like labs but just throwing his bumper while he’s jumping around doesn’t seem right
Hope that question makes sense And is not too confusing
Heck I was a little confused writing it😂😂
Thank you in advance

We use OK to let our dogs know they can quit doing what we tell them, though sometimes it means fetch to them....  :chuckle: We use their name to send them to retrieve, makes it less confusing when there is more than one dog around. Our are retrievers though.  ;)

Technically you're "releasing" him with the command so as long he/she gets it......I use "dead bird....dead bird" for them to focus on the retrieve. With covey birds/loads of scent everywhere I kinda think it helps to get them on track.

Works best to use a separate command. We use ‘Take it’ for any directed retrieval. The dog stays put until we give it.

I use "Ok." as a release command.

"Fetch" as, bust out to get it, find it, pick it up, bring it back, and put it in my hand... All of the above are "fetch."

I have several dogs, so I use their name as, "You come and the rest of you stay!" (If you saw my puppy videos, I make them respect doors and gates, then when they're adults, I "sit" command the whole pack, then open the gate, then release one of them with their name, then close the gate, then "ok" release the whole pack.)

I use a gutteral, deep, quick, grunt, "Huunt" to command to find, keep looking, look harder, it's there don't quit, etc.

To each their own. Consistency is the ONLY important factor. Pick one and use it.

Seems to.me like my voice inflection is more important that the actual words.

Thanks guys
So working on his fetching you think it will be alright to hold him until I let him go to fetch
Without causing any problems down the road?
Thanks again

My initial thought on it is to incorporate a voice command into it too... like stay, hold, sit, or something. You want to be hands free eventually, but you'll still have to re-enforce through the excitement.

Have/are you planning on using the "whoa" command? This and come/here are the two most important in my book period. Lots of different opinions on your dog holding point through flush and shot. I personally hunt mostly alone and want my dog to break on flush....others like it the other way for various reasons. There is no right or wrong. Keep it simple, learn how to read your dog and have fun.

Thank you
What I meant by hold him was to not give him the release command he’s really steady at the heel position on my side hands free
I very much appreciate the input I love everything about the training

I haven’t worked on whoa yet and not sure about which way of going steady to shot or not
I’m definitely having fun

I was taught by my trainer to phyically tap the dog on the head as one gives the release command, (what ever single word you choose) just say it the same, EVERY time! Whether its a point breed or a Retriever breed...
Be consistant! :yeah:

"OK" used to be our release command. We now use "Break". Ok is just too commonly used and the dog may be released inadvertently in conversation with someone.
