training in snow
« on: January 03, 2022, 05:13:39 PM »
Woke of this morning to around 2' of fresh snow and it was a good chance to work the pup in fresh powder.  I've had issues with my dogs finding ducks in a couple feet of fresh powder.  The ducks just disappear in the deep snow and it's difficult for both me and dog to find the birds even when we mark the bird. Has anyone else had issues with retrieving in deep snow

The snow envelopes their scent. We lost one into it during that cold snap. I didn't do a very good job of marking the spot as we were in a marshy area with lots of hummocks of snow covered grass.

Snow is probably a god training opportunity for marking practice.
