Plaid clothing = camouflage for deer
« on: January 04, 2022, 10:39:38 AM »
Deer are red-green color blind. What that means is that a red plaid Makinaw coat will break up the human outline, thus effective camouflage on deer. The color red will make one visible to other hunters with normal human color vision. Thus safety.
Our grandfathers knew this, as illustrated by this hunting outfit from the mid-20th century. Somehow that was forgotten.

Audacity, and again, audacity, and always audacity.

Yeah, I remember reading years ago how they don't see the red end of the spectrum but do see the blue end.  I always try to avoid blue on anything, whether it makes any difference or not is unknown.

I've owned lots of Woolrich and LL Bean wool clothing. I didn't really buy much camo until I moved out here and found out that the only gear elk can't see is Sitka.

Unfortunately this is what Woolrich makes today...and it's $795.

Or, you can get a flannel shirt for $195.

With that new product, the deer will only see a disembodied man/wolf head and two legs. Guaranteed to freak any deer out. Do we have to wear hunter orange so the deer can see us and even things out?

I'd probably wear my Canadian Tuxedo hunting, blue as it is, before I wore a $1,000 Mackinaw plaid outfit  :chuckle:
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

Not saying it was because I was wearing a black and green flannel but the whitetail I shot this year was just staring at me while I walked into view turned 90* nocked an arrow drew and shot. Thought it was kinda weird that a whitey let me do that :dunno:

It is the magic effect of plaid. ;)

I hunt in my red/black Woolrich all the time. Wore it today.

My old man had one coat to his name; a red/black Filson (two if you count rain gear).

Use to be when I started hunting, we just wore what we had,  killed lots of deer and elk.
I had a red cruiser vest with lots of pockets I always wore hunting.

I own that exact jacket! (the one from the first post, not the girly-man version available today)

Very very warm jacket and it has lasted generations!

Grew up in upstate New York.
Everybody wore red plaid.
Many still do.

I've been using a Blue Swanndri plaid for years muzzie hunting. Never had a deer or elk shy away because of the blue.
