How hard could it be?
« on: January 20, 2022, 12:59:47 PM »
I have a opportunity to hunt elk with a private landowner tag. I can use my rifle or bow. I've never hunted elk only deer with my bow. YouTube is full of videos elk hunting with a bow. Most, if not all show the elk responding to hunters bugling. I've been practicing and it doesn't seem to difficult to pick up. Can a first time elk hunter expect to get close enough for a shot with a bow?

When and where is your hunt? Calling is best Sept and into October. Spot and stalk or ambush might be your best bet
The mountains are calling and I must go

Cow calls might peak interest this time of year, at least get something to stand still. I wouldn’t expect to hear any bugles until as early as late August.

The hunt is in Washington near Mt Rainier. Not sure of the exact location, yet.

Hunting with a bow is pretty simply walking around with bow in hand, it’s the killing that’s the hard part.😉

Getting in range, then getting a non-obstructed shot off, being quite enough the animals don’t know your there etc….

I got to within 30 yards of an old blacktail regressor this year twice, after the second time he had enough of me and beat feet.

But that’s why it’s so fun your actually hunting them and have to get closer than with a gun. Very madding but addicting.🤣
