2006 duramax tranny getting hot???
« on: July 05, 2022, 02:18:10 PM »
I’ve never had a problem towing my 29’ trailer before, this weekend going up chinnok pass I had to pull over and let my tranny cool down  :bash:.  Changed the fluid and filter about 40,000 ago, fluid looks and smells fine.  Looking at some YouTube videos it might be debri in my cooler.  Anyone have any ideas??  Thinking of just replacing the cooler and bottom cooler line, is that easy???  Or am I missing something ?

That's hot.  I would guess a blockage, but other's will know more.
Good luck!

A blockage makes sense to me, and new stock GM coolers are only 154.00 on rockauto. It’s an easy thing to check off the list anyway, not sure how tough the job is.

Bullet proof it!

If you really hit 275-280 odds are that you are going to lose a seal or two at some point. At those kinda of temps auto trans tend to not last very much longer at all. Definitely sounds like a blockage or trans was not locked up! Not sure how the fluid smelled ok at those temps. The fluid is cooked for sure.

flush, blow out cooler.  I would put big cooler on but would think duramax has it ???  TruCool Max 40,000lb units are best I've found.

It's an Allison should have a big cooler on it...mine did anyway.

And ya...fluid is cooked. If your gauge is accurate... normally she'll start slipping at those temps...

Flush, fluid, filter and cross your fingers

It should be a stock cooler, which I would think is a good one. but I've heard flushing is a joke??  I bet it would cost more to flush than just replace, IF i can replace it myself??  I'm going to replace the fluid and filter this weekend, then when it's empty try to pull the bottom line off and see if I can look for debris.  I sure hope it's not ruined, allison is the best is all I've heard, I hope it's tough enough to handle a little heat.  I guess if I start seeing fluid on the ground I'm screwed, maybe I can sell it to Mags or another liberal, that way I can sleep at night.   :chuckle:

Dropping the pan only drops about 1/2 the fluid.

it’s been a while but isn’t there a plug to drain it all?

It won't all ever drain...lines are full. Torque conv is full...flush is the only way to expell all the old fluid....

If you mess it up I'll buy it from ya...since it's got an LBZ in it... :chuckle:
