Lead buckshot found in deer
« on: November 12, 2022, 06:27:50 PM »
I recently filled my second deer tag with my muzzle loader. While skinnging the deer I found several #7or8 buckshot between the skin and body.  None of deer had any discolored meat and the deer seemed to be perfectly healthy. I am aware of the potential danger of meat shot with lead.  Should I be concerned  that this deer had been carrying the lead for unknown amount of time?  All of the organs looked normal.  Just wanted to get some feedback before I feed the family. Thanks!

Wouldnt bother me either . I would be more worried about breaking a tooth . No different than hunting small game with lead shot .

I wouldnt think a handful of birdshot intermuscular would result in a high lead/ mercury absorbsation  :twocents:

I just trim the meat back around the old bullets/pellets a little.
I did shoot one years back that had a .22 bullet in it.  The bullet had broken a rib.  The meat looked fine, but the rib had a big fracture and was causing the meat to stink terribly so.  It was worse than a gut shot, foul, rutted up buck shot on a hot day.   The deer acted normally prior to the shot.

Number 7 or 8 buckshot has to be the equivalent to Lead t shot or that about. #4 is about all that is normally produced unless home poured. never heard of #7 0r 8 before. Killed coyotes with BB and purchased some steel F shot this year...

Probably got away from some walleye fishermam on their way to a weigh in...

I would avoid meat in the immediate proximity but otherwise not worry about it.

There’s probably more lead in the water you drink then what you would get from that deer.

As kids we us to bet on who would be the first to hit a piece of bird shot, when we had duck or goose.
Happened every time, and my mom was great at plucking and
cleaning.
Only 2 defining forces sacrificed themselves for you:
The American Soldier and Jesus Christ. One died for your freedom, the other for your soul.

My rock,
He trains my hands for war and my fingers for battle.
Psalm 144.1
