Buddy of mine had an Alta tag. Took a pretty nice 2pt. Snow was an issue and crunched for time.

Had two folks I knew that had tags in two different units. Snow was a factor in both units and hindered the hunt to a certain extent. One ate tag soup (he’s very picky and has killed many tape measure bucks, had something in mind he did not see), the other killed a buck that was a 26” wide 4 by 5, he was very happy with it. Both are friends of mine going back 35 and more years ago, both know the valley very well. Both said with the amount of snow that was on the ground and it’s timing they expected to see a lot more deer than what they did.

BM,  Do you feel the snow hit too  Quick and the big bucks are still up in the mountains work in their way down? Or have the wolves affected the deer so badly that the big bucks are getting eaten and the does, since they are in groups with more eyes survive better?

The more snow the better on most of these hunts.  Getting around can be challenging though

Who had the Swakane late Rifle tag??
I saw a deep forked 4x4 that would have been in the 160’s yesterday.

I can only imagine how good riding a horse up some of those roads would have been.

Snow was rough but I was still able to get one.

Great buck Nimrod, love those dark heavy ones. I think I bumped into you in the hills one day when the snow was just getting going. Glad to see you got a good one.

Going into this hunt I had every intention of milking it out til the bitter end and eating the tag if need be in order to find a big one, but that's not the way it ended up. I was working a ton of hours in the months leading up to this hunt and had very little time to prepare let alone spend with the family. Overall it was a good hunt, most days averaged 10-15 bucks but the quality was very low for the most part. I spent some time hunting up higher than I probably should have been in order to try to locate a better class of deer to no avail. Sign was nearly non-existent up there let alone deer sightings. The snow was rough there for a while, but towards the end it had melted down to a manageable level in the areas I was hunting, around a foot or so on the south facing slopes. The wife managed to make it up for a few days to hunt with me and we ended up killing the first decent buck I had laid eyes on in 10 days. He was moving fairly quickly through some timber at 500yds and we didn't have a lot of time to judge him, I thought he was a little better than he ended up being but subconsciously I think I pulled the trigger because I was ready to get home and finally spend some time with the kiddos.

Great buck Mtnwalker, man those genes run strong up there.

Yep that was me up cub creek, glad to see you got a nice one.
"One does not hunt in order to kill; on the contrary, one kills in order to have hunted...If one were to present the sportsman with the death of the animal as a gift he would refuse it. What he is after is having to win it, to conquer the surly brute through his own effort and skill with all the extras that this carries with it: the immersion in the countryside, the healthfulness of the exercise, the distraction from his job."
