Bird Suet Thief!!!!!
« on: May 24, 2009, 07:55:02 AM »
I built a real nice bird feeder that I put up just off our deck so we can enjoy all the different species of birds from our living room window last year.  My wife has hung 3 different suit cages off the bottom of the bird feeder with small chains.  Every time she puts a berry mix or peanut butter mix suet up, guess what, it's gone by morning, SUET CAGE AND ALL!!! :bash:  The broken chain that held the cage up is on the ground.  3 times the cage was no where to be found.  The last two times, 2 days ago and last night, the cages was found about 20 feet from the feeder with the cage door open and the suet gone. >:(

I'm guessing bear because the the suet is about 6 feet off the ground.  I went to Cabela's yesterday and bought the Moultrie 5.0 IR and am going to set it up tonight.  Hopefully we will know who/what the culprit is.  Any ideas???? :dunno:  Talk with you soon.  John

Good luck in finding the culprit, more than likely bear but could be one them there raccoons also I have seen them get in a lot of mischief.

check out this website or this product.  It supposedly protects things at night from coons, etc.  Its 29.95 and looks similiar to a trail camera.  I'm not promoting the object, just found it while reading one of my pheasant magazines.

I first thought that it was a Racoon, but I have never seen one up here before. I just got back in from setting the camera up, so hopefully the "suspect"  will come in tonight and I will post pic's tomorrow.  John

The Suet has not been touched since I put the camera up.  Here are a couple of pic's from the new camera.  So far pretty happy with it.  Maybe tonight the Suet Thief will show up. ;)  John

If he does, then the big gun's are coming out.  ;)  I just bought that camera and so far love it.  I sure wish I would have got one years ago.  They are fun, and believe it or not, "there like a box of chocolate, you never know what your going to get" when you walk up to them to see how many pictures were taken and what's on them. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:  Take care everyone and talk with you soon.  John

back in NY we had a clothesline off of our patio and across the yard to a tree. we hung suet on it for the birds. one night we heard some crashing, so i got up and ran out to see a bear on my deck had ripped the clothesline off of the deck. he was headed down to get the suet. he had worked on that thing pretty hard, there was a bunch of dirt/clay ground into the wood on the deck railing where he had been leaning over it.
interesting thing to me was he climbed over the railing to get to a tree that was a couple feet away from the deck to climb down rather than climb down the stairs that was right next to that tree.

Jackelope, now that is funny.  They sure are a strange creature.  Nothing yet Joe.  At 4:10 this morning I heard a bang on my deck and thought it was him, but when I got up and peeked out the window there was nothing there.  Nothing came in last night at all, not even a deer.  I'm wondering if it smells the camera or something.  John
