I got another last night.
Tearing it up very nice. Overall how have you felt with performance in a whole with the sierra gameking hpbt 55 grain bullets. I started loading those and have great target performance and can’t wait to use them on dogs.
Thanks. I'm happy with the Sierra gameking hpbt 55gr bullets. For the past few years i've used mostly 50 grain v-max's. I have had many good bang-flop shots with the v-max's, but i've also had a few where I hit coyotes in shoulders and the bullets splashed on the surface and didnt' penetrate and the coyote ran off. These Sierra gamekings definitely stay together and penetrate better. I think this is the 6th coyote I've shot with the sierra gamekings. The coyotes don't seem to drop "dead in their tracks" quite as quickly as when they get hit with a good shot placement with a 50 grain v-max, but when I hit them in a shoulder or other less-than-ideal location, they do pile up within 20' of where they were hit.
I read that the Sierra HPBT gamekings have low BC and are affected by wind quite a bit, so they are not a great long range bullet. But most of my shots are under 100 yds so that's not a factor for me. If i'm hunting in a spot where I expect to take shots out to 200 or 300 yds I'll probably grab a box of v-max's.
The coyote I shot a few weeks ago that was standing broadside on a dirt pile when I shot it (The video is on here), The bullet passed through the coyote and went into an alder tree behind it. I found the bullet entry hole on the tree. It was a small clean hole that looked like I had shot it point blank with a .22lr. I took my knife and tried to dig the bullet out of the tree. I dug about 1" into the tree and then started scraping lead off the back of the bullet. I gave up because I didn't want to kill the tree. The main takaway, is that on a 60 yd broadside shot through the vitals, the bullet passed through the coyote and didn't hardly expand at all (if at all). The coyote fell dead about 5' from where it was standing when it was hit. Based on past experience, if I had made that shot with a 50 grain v-max: 50% chance bullet would not have exited, 50% chance there would have been a 4"+ blowout hole on the backside.
Overall I'm happy with the performance of these Sierra 55grain HPBT gamekings. I suspect they will work great for you too. I look forward to hearing your success stories with them.
