It wasnt just  the arm but the back muscles on one side. 100lb war bows were common. the skeletal remains indicated that the english had scoliosis, the curve in the spine. It was do to working out one side of the back. After church on Sundays they would hold archery practice for a couple of hours. Young boys, old men and everyone between would shoot an hour or 2 each week.
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.
