Browning Rover Recurve
« on: June 02, 2023, 03:11:21 PM »
Hey, all -

Looking for any and all traditional archery tips.

Over the past few years I have been fairly interested in getting a traditional bow, being I grew up shooting mainly with instincts in the back yard. Shooting my compound now days is fun and all, but I would like to dabble in the trad game.

I was dinging around at a thrift store looking for golf clubs and a beautiful Browning Rover caught my eye. I picked it up and have been starting to really look into getting it in shooting order.

The string that came with it was in bad shape, so my first step is trying to figure out how to get a string and, most importantly, the correct string. Seems like the main thing I should be worried about it string length. That being said I have had a tough time knowing which length to get. I took it into an archery shop near me and even he wasn't able to tell me what string length to get. His confusion has really thrown me for a loop. I didn't think it would be that difficult to get a string.

Can anyone give me a fool proof way to measure for string length and where a good place to order one is? The bow is 35# and 64" AMO. I'll be pulling somewhere between 29 and 30".

Along with the string, I'll be looking for arrows. Any good tips on how to go about that? I was thinking somewhere around the 400-500 spine with feather fletchings. Anything else I should keep in mind? I was told I could shoot right off the shelf which is what I was planning on doing unless a rest is far more superior for a beginner?

Also, anything else you guys and gals can throw at me?

I really appreciate any advice!
