D-Day Remembrance
«
on:
June 06, 2023, 09:42:17 AM »
On June 6th, 1944, The combined forces of England, Canada, and the United States, stormed the beaches of Normandy France. The soldiers faced withering machine gun fire, mines, obstacles, and mortars. The courage of these men, determined to free Europe from the grip of a monster, is almost unfathomable. Only a handful of these men still survive. Today, we acknowledge their bravery and honor. Never forget.

Had an uncle that was D Day plus 3. He was a medic and truck driver. Man he told some stories!

I am forever humbled by the contributions of those great men.
The accounts that I find most unfathomable include machine gun bullets rattling off the landing craft doors prior to lowering.

We've been chatting with the kids the last week or so about D-Day and it's so hard for them (anyone really) to compute the catastrophic loss of life that occurred. There is no doubt those men truly were the greatest generation.

Words to ponder on the 79th Anniversary.
“Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well-trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely…I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory! Good Luck! And let us all beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking” –
General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Allied Commander
“I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory! Good luck!” –
Winston Churchill

This is the insignia that my grandfather wore on his shoulder when he landed on Utah beach 79 years ago today. He was one of the US Army 90th infantry division “Tough ‘Ombres”. He wouldn’t tell us any stories about any of this stuff when we were kids, so I’ve had to read up about all of it on the web. Here’s a quick overview for anyone interested.

Sorry not sorry if I’ve posted the same thing over and over annually.

The bravest generation...a lot of us wouldn't be here if it wasn't for their sacrifices. Storming that beach took the courage most of us will never now, glad they rid the world of evil for all of us to have the lives we have now. I couldn't imagine living in a time like the early 40s and having to go through all those horrors, I'll be eternally grateful forever
