Was wondering why my elk spot was barren...
« on: October 29, 2023, 08:47:04 PM »
Early season muzzleloading for elk I went to my usual spot and started glassing the ridge looking for elk. The trails around the rock ledges seemed unused for an extended period of time.
Nobody nearby said they had seen anything since June and I had to go to a different location. Well now I know why. These were shot together in the pasture of the neighboring ranch and another guy across the canyon about 2 miles away said he has game cam pics of several mature Tom's and a few youngsters. Damn it!

I guess I didn't clarify, one of the ranchers friends and the friends daughter shot them. I was not there. Either way it's a great job on them and hopefully it makes a difference in the local herd populations. This is another one shot just North of the same area last year I think it was.200lbs

Yep, if you know the folks, tell them congratulations and thank you. For folks who think predators are not problem number 1 for our herds. Well, think again. The estimate of 3000 cats in this state is absurd!

I already complained about this elsewhere, but I was talking to one of the loggers in the snoqualmie tree farm, and he said the biologist estimates that there are 400 cougars just in the tree farm.  In my ten or so days in there looking for deer, I saw 4 cougars jump across logging roads while driving, and exactly 2 bucks.  That's bonkers...

I never put any effort into hunting cats but after the last couple years I think it's time to start. I just don't know that I want to eat one.  :dunno:
