Montana deer 2024
« on: February 28, 2024, 09:56:46 AM »
I was looking at the calendar yesterday and realized that Thanksgiving is late this year meaning that Montana deer season goes through Dec 1st  :yike:  The area I go is mainly whitetails and the rut seems to be going good around the 22-24 but having that later week could be pretty good depending on the weather.

From Montana Fish and Game:

Dear license buyer,

Happy new license year! March 1 is the day hunters can start applying for general hunting licenses and permits. The deadline to apply for deer and elk permits is April 1, but don’t wait until the last minute. It’s a good idea to apply early.

Applications for most species – deer, elk, antelope, deer B licenses, elk B licenses, antelope B licenses, moose, sheep, goat, bison, bear, turkey – can be made beginning March 1.

New for this year is that nonresident hunters who hold a Nonresident Combination License may possess a total of two Deer B Licenses. Nonresident hunters who do not hold a Nonresident Combination License may possess a total of one Deer B License.

Also new this year, nonresidents who own at least 2,500 contiguous acres may qualify for priority in drawing a nonresident Big Game or Elk Combination License. More information can be found here: fwp.mt.gov/buyandapply/hunting-licenses/nonresident-licenses/combination-license-priority-pool.

Please note that General Deer Licenses and Deer B Licenses for antlerless mule deer in Regions 6 and 7 are valid only on private land.

You can buy licenses and apply for permits on the FWP website beginning at 5 a.m. on March 1; click on “Buy and Apply.” Most FWP offices will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Once you have your licenses and permits, you can use the MyFWP mobile app to hold and display licenses, permits and E-Tags. Once you’ve downloaded these items, you will be able to access them in the field without cell service.

If you do not already have a MyFWP account, you can set one up through the MyFWP login page.

The licensing call center will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. from March 1 through April 1; after April 1, the hours will return to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The call center can be reached at 406-444-2950.

To watch a video on the permit application process for nonresidents, click here. For more information on Montana hunting licenses and permits, go to fwp.mt.gov/buyandapply/hunting-licenses.

I don’t own 2500 acres so its points only this year for group then hunt next year.  Weird was we had one guy in our group draw with one point and another fail to draw with 2 points.  Neither of those should have been possible last year.  ???

Last year 2 points was only like 84% I believe. However, I agree that nobody with 1 point should have drawn. Are you sure that person actually had a point?

Edit: I guess I’m wrong on all fronts, and the data I heard was not for the deer combo.

Somebody had to have been mistaken with what they had for points. A 1pt holder cannot draw before a 2pt holder. If true your buddy should have called and gotten his tag.

That was my thought exactly.
Crazy that one point had 0% chance and 0 points had 60% chance but thats the system.   Different buddy with zero points bought a point before the draw 2 years ago - essentially eliminating his chance of drawing.

Frankly I can’t believe they havent shut down antlerless harvest yet. I’ve only hunted Montana three times and there has been a dramatic decrease in deer numbers from what I’ve seen :twocents:

:yeah:  STOP SHOOTING MULE DEER DOE'S! Just because the state puts out the tags doesn't mean we should be filling them. You can't expect to grow a herd if your shooting out the baby makers.  Grab some whitetail B tags instead  :twocents:
