I’ve been staring at Goats almost everyday this month, but haven’t made a decision yet  :chuckle:. Pronghorn tag or goat tag? Hmmm. Freezers are still well packed with moose, deer, and lion so really don’t need another deer or elk this year.  :chuckle:

That’s seriously the hard part. One thing I really liked about Washington was being able to apply for it all. Idaho definitely limits that for you. Honestly surprising they do it, end of the day they loose a ton of money because of it. Same amount of tags issued either way.
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

How did you like those draw odds in Washington compared to Idaho?

That system allowed me to draw first time I applied and my Dad the following year.  Some luck still but the odds were dramatically improved by their system of doing things

This is only my third year putting in a draw in Idaho and have yet to pull anything. I can only apply for one thing here. So I just put in for moose. In WA I never got a moose, currently have 19 points just sitting there. But I did manage to draw several great elk tags over the years (peaches ridge 2 yrs in a row) and a ton of deer tags.

I guess I never really expect to get drawn lol. It’s more like pull tabs, you do it for the fun of it never expecting to really win. It sucks only playing one 😂

I spent my 200 bucks last night for that same pull tab dream in Utah.   I'm max points in every category.   I loathe point systems

What makes Idaho "good" is the amount of tags versus applicants rather than the system - unless you're the type that is only really focused on one species.  In Idaho your odds will rarely improve over time. Most of the time they will go down as applicants increase, and you're locked in at 0% for the other species.

I too hate preference point systems, but don't mind bonus points since you still have a chance regardless of where you're at.

I'd rather take a slim chance at all than a small chance at one.  :twocents:

And for what it's worth, I'm in for moose.

Idaho does have more tags - but I prefer their system. Every hunter in my entire family has drawn moose tags.

Last years Idaho moose tags (517) divided by moose applicants (7384) = overall 7% of applicants getting a moose tag.

There were close to 75,000 apps for elk tags alone last year.

You start letting E/D/A people put in for M/S/G...you absolutely turn the system into less than 1% of applicants getting a moose tag which means the vast majority of folks will never draw in their hunting lifetimes.

But its all a game of trade-offs...<1% chance at moose is not 0...and you can also draw some E/D/A tags along the way.

Points sound great unless you’re the new guy 😂 Reality I have pretty high odds of drawing my moose tag in Idaho eventually. I put in 19 yrs in WA and got a big goose egg. Figure my donations filled in a few potholes in King Co.

Great breakdown.  This why I support the current system 100%.

Got my moose tag on year #3 and my wife drew a moose tag her first year applying.  One of us has drawn an extra whitetail does tag every year for the past 5 years and last year we both drew an extra  whitetail doe tag.

Hoping yr 3 is my lucky number. Same unit you got, by back yard lol…

Not even close.

For sure not even close… out of staters in Idaho have a 5% or better chance at drawing some moose tags… in Washington top points holders have <1% chance.
People get offended at nothing at all. So, speak your mind and be unapologetic.
