Cracked Stock on Savage 99
« on: May 23, 2024, 11:49:34 AM »
Hello, I have an older Savage Model 99 rifle that has a cracked stock. I would like to find someone in the pacific northwest who can repair or restore this stock, or put a different one on. Can someone refer me to a rifle stock guy who does good work? Thank you.

My 'go to' for any stock work has been "The Stock Doctor" in Oregon. Been a while but I presume he is still around.
He does custom stock fitting to a specific person as well.
Cuterebra are NOT cute!

I remember lots of 99's with cracked stocks as a kid.  Running around the woods with tape wrapped around them.  They still handed out dirt naps though!  Good luck on the restore.

My old man has three 99s, all in 300 savage. They’re all fixed now but one he bought cracked and one cracked while he was hunting. Wonder why they seem to have issues, love the rifles.

It was really common, I suppose cheap thin stocks from recoil I suppose....  You had to be careful where you taped the stock together, if you taped over the cocking indicator you were out of luck.  Lot's of deer missed because it was taped over.  Every camp back in the day had a story of someone who missed on a big buck because the tapped over the cocking indicator.  They had to hear it season after season too!   :chuckle:

200RUM, Caseknife, & Jpmiller, thank you. This .250-3000 still shoots ok, but I just want to get it repaired. Caseknife, thanks for the link.

I bought a new one from Boyd’s at one point. Sold the rifle later. Big mistake…

Thank you. How true to the original stock was the Boyds stock? Did you get both the buttstock and forearm?

This was the replacement stock with factory forend.  This is also like 10 years ago so no idea what it’s like now but I was happy with it

OMG, how did the barrel get bent like that? You did a heck of a job on that rifle!
