This is what we really get excited about. As much as we love our bear burger, our favorite meat. Having a healthy supply of good cooking oil is just as valuable.

The bears have not touched the red hucks in the areas I have been hunting.  It could be because they prefer a different berry?  Lots of cascara and black berries seem to be their targeted food source.  I also noticed they never touch the mountain ash either on the wet side but get east and they eat them up??

After all the other berries are gone they eat the mountain ash berries.😉

I've seen bear scat full of mountain ash in the height of the blueberry crop.  Someone should create a tv show, 'bears do the darndest things'

Shot this fat sow on labor day. Shot her at 30' when she stood up out of the buckbrush. Shot her while she was standing on her hind feet. Lots of fat on her. (No cubs, dry sow, not producing milk). Got her hanging in the newly minted walk in cooler. Time to make breakfast sausage and lard.

One of the fattest bears I have killed was a sow between birthing years. They must really stock up to survive childbirth in winter. Bear was maybe 5.5’ but easily 300# with the 4” of fat.
