Spokane Area Bird Hunting
« on: August 21, 2024, 09:49:16 AM »
Hi all!  I'll be finishing my grad degree at GU this fall/spring, and hoping to get out and hunt some birds this fall.  I hunted a fair bit when I was a teenager (mainly for ducks and a little bit of big game).  I've been wanting to get into hunting upland birds, pheasant mainly but am open to anything, but don't have a dog and my past experience trying for pheasants without a dog was very difficult.  I'm also happy to "trade" some some knowledge about backcountry skiing/winter backcountry travel/mountaineering if of interest.  I've worked in the design of backcountry ski/avalanche rescue equipment, have a solid amount of training and lots of experience in various parts of the Americas I'd be stoked to share.

Lots of upland birds in the Columbia basin which isn't a long drive from Spokane. I did it almost every weekend, for waterfowl, when I was at Gonzaga too. Go Zags

Thanks for the advice!  Went out there a bit when I was an Undergradat GU several years ago, will definitely make a point to get back out there.  Snagged a turkey this morning (my first) so I'm getting excited

Nice congrats. Not having a dog is harder but not impossible for killing birds. I have killed plenty where the dog had no part of it, especially around thickets of Russian Olive trees. If you can find patches of those, near some water and other cover, you will probably find birds.

Don't forget to post a photo of your turkey.

Good to know, thanks for the advice!  And per the request here's the turkey.  Didn't think to take a picture with me in it as I was alone.

Nice bird!
What country can preserve it's liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon & pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants.

First go at cooking it (frying it) turned out awesome!  Was neither gamy nor super tough as I've often heard about wild turkey
