My first
« on: October 02, 2024, 01:53:24 PM »
Dana and I went fission today 15 minutes into the troll. I got bit, got it to the boat and no kidding. A seal took it. Never had that situation. Heard of it all the time, but first time I experienced it. Sucker took all my gear :yike:🤪🤪🤪

Had it happen to me to me a few times fishing in Canada. Single action reels with the drag on and click, the buzzing of the reel attracts them. The guides stopped using the click because of the seals.

We try to stay quiet when fighting fish, careful not to bang around or smack the net on the boat etc. Anecdotal but it seems to help a little

I've been reeling in salmon and seen sea lions go under the boat faster than a torpedo.......the fish looked like it was trying to jump into the boat. Usually I'd try to slowly and carefully retrieve a salmon......not with sea lions in the water. Increase the drag and horse it in QUICK!!!

Guiding in AK for 22 years I couldn't even begin to guess how many fish I lost to mainly sea lions but occasionally seals, lost 4 kings one day to sea lions. Watched another boat fight a 50-60 pound king for about 30 minutes before a sea lion took it.

Only solution that is legal is to move. Been sealed more times than I can count, even on the Skagit. I have had them swim behind the boat at 20 yards just watching, second you grab the rod they dive and your fish is gone, usually with your rig.

Tried horsing a 20 pound king that was being chased this year in Canada, ended up with a broken rod, no gear, no fish.

Fishing in tight you can see them just sit in the kelp in wait. Making noise etc doesn't matter at that point.

I don't have much love for sea sausages.

Yep they certainly do.  The first commercial boat I fished on had one of the last remaining Marine Mammal Harvest Permits.  It was issued in the early '50's...and that's all I have to say about that.
