It was a rainy and windy Halloween in 663, I had missed most of general modern and all the stormy days prior when I kept seeing lots of people taking deer posted to Facebook groups. I didn't know stormy days brought out the boys. My daughter is too young to trick or treat so I got her some clothes from the thrift store and we went out dressed as deer hunters.

I've been hunting this property for a few years but hadn't recently seen any activity so the plan was to walk the road and hope we get the drop on a buck. Normally I sit in my blind but, that wasn't an option for still hunting this time.

We got the property about 5pm, got suited up and got to walking. Something about an extra 20+ pounds on your front will make you walk a bit slower. 3/4 of a mile in we come around a bend in the road and see black tails feeding. I got the rifle up to glass them, saw some antlers through the brush and they moved on. We crept real slow to where they were and then we saw them again in a clearing just off the road bit, maybe 40yds. The closest deer was clearly antlerless and the other one I couldn't see the top of the head because of the brush. Rifle up again and I'm moving around trying to find a window to check for antlers. Ah, yes, there's definitely a buck there. The window, with a solid shooting stance only give me the face and neck. Well I know this rifle will give me what I want at this distance so I'm taking this neck shot. PEW.

Deer move on. Buck isn't in sight. Walk over and there's the buck laying right where he previously stood. One .308 Accubond suppressed to the neck, "didn't even go 1"

After dragging him into the road we walked back to the truck in the storm, got situated and drove over to load him up. Ms. Rachel and snacks kept her entertained while I did the tasks.

Drove to a friend's house and his wife watched her while I took care of it. I had came prepared with her dinner and snacks. She did great with a new person for the first time without me. Definitely the most epic blacktail hunt I've had to date.

Came in sniffing 3 does. Not the 2 big bucks we had on cam but definitely good enough and the big bucks will be that much bigger next year.

First deer that wasn't roadkill!  :IBCOOL:
Not a monster but a fairly big bodied blacktail

My youngest son came home from college and only had today to hunt as his college baseball schedule keeps him pretty busy.

I've really enjoyed seeing everyone's deer.

Here's one that got away.

Congratulations to everyone, especially the kids and first timers. Thanks for sharing.

I saw 14 bucks and 2 does during general in pursuit of my target buck.
I saw him once from my stand but branches and brush foiled my opportunity as he cruised through. Late buck I was in meat mode and hadn’t seen a deer until this afternoon. I thought I was going to get tag soup. The rut appeared to be over and the deer were hiding out recovering. No fresh tracks on roads or trails. At 1:00 I let my wife know I still hadn’t seen a deer, she replied “ you still have time.” Lucky for me I did. He’s a younger buck. Didn’t smell rutty and neck hardly swollen. He was hanging with a smaller two point. My grandpa gave me his bike the year he passed. It is way too big for me but I enjoy using it during hunting season.

Super happy with this coastal blacktail. Got him an hour before dark looking into openings between 25 foot high jackfir. Battled sheets of rain and fog all day.
