Really would you send your dog?

To me this is a disgusting example of dog handling. He says it two feet of water and skin ice, but it’s thick enough to support the dog in places.

I have used my dog in ice before if I knew it could support her all the way. And I have broken up ponds if the ice was too thin. But just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

Personally I wouldn't risk it. Had my dog in ice one time and that was enough for me to say never again. If its only 2 feet of water, why isn't he wading out there? My gut is he doesn't want to rip his Sitka waders...  :chuckle:

There isn’t a single bird worth risking my dogs life.

Myself, would've found a much better spot for shootin birds where they actually wanna be feet down in the dekes. My Panz woulda plowed through the ice some time back. I dislike stopping him when he commits. Knowing this I avoid trouble areas. I am sure some folks would panic if they witnessed my pointers on long strides through rimrock and canyon country, mere feet from death plunges. Good dogs will die to please us. Great dogs live hunt again. Person in video feels confident in his choice to send. Go for it.

Hmmmm.  I don't waterfowl much if any anymore.  But many moons ago, my dad's lab went out onto sheet ice and broke through.  He ended up under the ice with no way up.  Had to quickly rescue by breaking ice.

In this, ice near the blind was well broken up.  Where the dog got stuck, didn't look like there was much opportunity to get stuck under, so I don't see the dog being at risk.  Worst case the dog can't return by getting back up on the ice.  As long as the dog doesn't get completely exhausted, rescue is available.

I wouldn't send my dog anywhere I'm not willing to go into first.

I don't see anything indicating he wouldn't go.  Dog gets first dibs.

I had a GSP that wasn't trained well... And no patience sitting for ducks... Jump shot a bunch over him... But if the water was too cold he'd stop when he got b*lls deep...  :chuckle:
I love you... I really do...
