Land Management for Black Tails
« on: January 23, 2026, 07:53:43 PM »
Greetings,

I recently acquired a nice parcel of land in 627 that is surrounded by state and tree farm. What can I do to properly manage forested land to promote a healthy deer population? Is there anyone that works in land management or forestry that could assist? What makes deer happy?

How much land? Blacktail are browsers so food plots aren't exactly necessary. Fruit trees, vine maples, black berries, ferns, young fir trees, salal, wild roses etc. The list goes on. Keep dogs away, shoot coyotes and control brush. If they don't have open areas close by then create some pasture areas, but like I said. Food plots per se like what a whitetail would want aren't really necessary. Plant good grass with a clover mix. That would be a good start. Keep the does happy and they will stay close by.

Unless ya got thousands of acres it won't matter as far as herd health. To attract deer ya want food, water, cover (bedding). Also, less pressure equals more daylight sightings.

 :yeah:
In 627 your biggest competition is residential yard's.
BT love a nice green lawn, ornamental plants and a good vegi garden.
And depending on where your at it could be a lost cause. Deer numbers are hit and miss around there.

My parents have 5 acres in 627 that they inherited... It has vine maple, hazel nut, blackberry, multiple apple, fig, asian pear trees... Can't keep the deer out of it... There's a browse line under all the fruit trees... They stand up and pull fruit out... A fig bent over in heavy snow one year so it got cut off at the stump... It shoots up every spring and gets hammered... My grandparents planted all these plants so it's well established but if you figure it out and start now with your research... If you build it, they will come!
I love you... I really do...
