How Many Shots?
« on: October 13, 2009, 09:02:48 PM »
I seem to hear the same guy every year when sitting and glassing, I think he took a total of 13 shots last year that I counted. :bash: Seems he moves to different parts of the canyon each year but I always manage to hear where he is hunting the current year :chuckle:

How many of you hear some guy take 4-5-6+++ shots?

Every year, someone takes 4 or more shots. Sometimes I think they are just shooting to shoot, but sometimes I just think about some guy or multiple guys shooting at a deer running up a hill 500 yards away. Dad always used this terminology for that, 1 shot=dead deer, 2 shots=maybe a dead deer, 3 shots= probably not a dead deer, 4 shots=poor *censored*. Beyond that is just irresponsible.
I hunt, therefore I am.... I fish, therefore I lie.

I watched a woman take 11 shots, then yell to her husband that she was out of bullets. If the deer would have been farther away from her I would have finished it off for her, rather than listen to it bawl.

Vail opening of late buck two years ago, first light I see a guy on the hill opposite, about 800 yds away lean over onto a stump and start firing away into the canyon below: BOOM, BOOOM.....BOOOM....BOOOM
.....BOOOOM,BOOOMM..........................BOOOOM,.................BOOOMMM.......BOOOOOOOMMMM

Nine friggin times this guy caps off, I'm like WTH is he shooting at, a yeti????

I run into the guys at the bottom of the hill late in the day, he killed a smallish spike. Only hit it two times.

Seems like there's someone like that everywhere.  I agree with 7mmfan. After about three shots I always figure the deer is running for it's life and the person "doesn't know when to say when".  Most times the shots are so close together they can't possibly be taking the time to get on the animal.

once my brother asked if he could use my rifle, I had one of those cartridge holders on the stock, holds nine. he says "can I have some more?" I reply "If you miss that much, you should just stay home!"

last years opener i was sitting on a old cut above a lake and at first light it sounded like a firering squad going off, at least 12 shots then a little while later another barrage of gun fire. i couldn't figure it out but then i finally did. it was  the duck opener also, and its a popular duck lake

last year there was a guy and gal and i think maybe one more person shooting at a 2pt across a canyon...oh id say 400yds maybe farther. so me and my girlfriend ran to the end of the road to see what they were shooting at. we seen the deer broadside at about 200yds maybe more then that now that i actually think about it. the other people stop shooting, so i loaded up my gun for my gf. she takes a shot and misses, the deer trots about 80yds and stops. my gf racks another round and drops it dead in its tracks. it was only her second time ever shooting a gun bigger then a 22lr.

those people who were shooting first went 100yds down the road and started shooting again at a spike, 4-5 shots and they got thier spike. and drug it right up to where we were parked. from what my mom said, they didnt seem to happy to be outdone by a little girl  :chuckle:

I watched a guy shoot 3 times at a deer at 300 yards.  The deer kept hearing things hit around it and was just looking around.  Good stuff.
Cut em!

Watched a guy shoot 15 times at a cow elk and kill it. First two crippled it and then he got the shakes really bad. Finished it off with number 16 at about 10yards.     Gutting it out and a 6pt bull ran out and stood right where we were standing shooting at the cow. Not one bullet left between us. I threw a rock and yelled but he still stood there for 15 more seconds before he trotted off.

I guess I have been lucky or something. Every deer I have killed, has been a 1-shot kill.  :dunno:

I agree with 7mm as well. I have not needed more than one shot before.....I do believe I would stop If I needed to reload.

When I was 13 my dad emptied his rifle at an antelope at around 300 yds.....while he was reloading I dropped him in his tracks! (of coarse he was missing his front right leg by then! :chuckle:)

Watched two guys shooting from a road with lever 30-30s both empty their rifles at a standing deer.  Kinda thought He might be a decoy or something. they were reloading I suppose to start again and he walked over the hill.  Got in their old ford and motored off.  12 shots i believe at over 400-500 yrds from them. could'nt hardly believe it.
