a few questions for ar-15

i am looking into investing into an ar-15. i am wondering the preferences of manufactures that you may have. if its m&p or bushmaster or h&k ect and why. also wondering if the ammunition you shoot out of it can negetively effect the barrel faster then the ammo i would hand reload. if ne1 is looking to sell one also let me know and price please. thankyou for your time

I have a Remington R-15 for sale in the classifieds.  I will let others answer your questions so you are sure you get an unbiased answer.    I chose the Remington because of the reviews (customer and professional).  It was my first and only AR 15 and I love it.  I am selling it because times are tough.  There are a lot of extras included for the price.

no worries you will get allot of   around here. my fave is bushmaster, i love the fit and feel of there guns. never a problem great guns. i also like the r-15 by remington i am getting the r-25 in 7mm-08 very soon. i am a big fan of longer barrels would be my   and as far as ammo you can get the rem umc for pretty cheap at like bimart for plinkin and such but 99% of the time i shoot my handloads.

Yeah pretty much the same gun with a camo dip.  Remington owns Bushmaster and DPMS.

  I thought I would throw in my  .  I own the grandfather of them all. I have an original Colt SP-1. In my opinion all of the above are very good rifles. I had no idea that Remington owns Bushmaster amd DPMS.  I do know that Stag Arms does all of the machining for Colt. Stag arms puts out a good rifle also. The number one thing I would say is stay away from SGW or Olympic Arms. The rifles work and function OK but the quality of the overall rifle is not up to snuff.  As far as the ammo...There are two standard bullet weights for that caliber. A 55gr. bullet or a 62gr. bullet. The standard twist rate is usaully a 1 in 9 twist.  The heavier bullet does not work well in a barrel with a 1 in 12 twist rate. 3 or 4 hundred meters out the bullet starts to topple. A 1 in 9 twist rate will handle both bullet weights just fine. The bullet stays stable past 300 meters. I guess it all depends on how much money you want to spend. The H&K platform is the single most expensive AR in the entire world. The mags alone are $50.00 a piece or better. It depends on your priorities.  Oner more thing to think about. The newer AR 's such as Remington and H&K are piston recoil operated rifles and the others are gas operated. I have not shot the newer rifles so I really can't comment on there performance. Okay, I do agree that the HK is probably the most expensive piece out there today. But SGW is no longer available, the name was changed to Olympic Arms many years ago and the part about " the overall rifles are not up to snuff"? Well, if you haven't bothered to take a good look at Oly Arms stuff in the past 20 years, you got some catching up to do. Lots and lots of catching up. Gone from Oly is the old cast receivers, those are what gave Oly/SGW a bad name and they have never been able to shake that old ghost that obviously still haunts them today.

Oly makes most all of their own parts except small parts, they make their own barrels which are regarded as some of the best shooting most accurate barrels available today.

 As far as bullets go, there is everything from 35 grain to 90 grain bullets for the 5.56/223 round. The most commonly used are the 40 to 75 grain these days simply because they fit in the magazines. There are plenty of shooters that run AR15 223's on the 1000 yard range weekly, so don't tell them their bullets are tumbling at 300 yards, they will look at you like you are from Mars 

There are some newer style "gas piston uppers" available and conversions for the gas impingement systems if you want to switch the older more common style over. However, they do not make the AR any more accurate, just much cleaner inside.

The old 12 twist was the original Stoner recommendation for the 55 grain bullets used in the military back in the late 1950's and early 60's. That all changed way back when the military started using longer/heavier projectiles. As the need for a tighter twist became apparent to stabilize the new bullets, the common theme was to change all barrels to a 9 twist. Then it progressed to shorter barrels like the M4 Carbine needing higher pressures even a tighter 1 in 7 twist rate to spin the bullets up faster due to the shorter barrel and very short dwell times for burnt powder to operate the actions reliably. However a 10 or 12 twist for a hunting rig is really ideal as it lowers operating pressures and allows for a higher velocities of the more commonly used 40-60 grain bullets when used in a 16 to 24 inch barrel, I personally prefer the 20 inch barrels for hunting as velocity and accuracy are at their maximum efficiency for the walk about hunter.

There is also many different calibers to choose from which significantly improve on the AR platform. I seldom use a 223 caliber these days as optional calibers perform much better in most cases. So in a nutshell, there are more options and choices to make when it comes to the AR15 platform. If you are not happy with these, then it's larger cousin, the AR10 sized platform may be a better choice.

I just bought the r-15 over the weekend, put a Leupold mark AR scope on it and was pretty impressed. I was shooting about 1 1/2" @ 125 yds....I have shot the bushmaster as well and it was a nice gun.....good luck

I have two Stag Arms AR's and I love them both.  They feel good in my hand and shoot well.

I have two DPMS (Panther Arms) ARs.  One is a 16" bull barrelled A3 (with a 4.5-14x44 mil dot), the other is an AP4 (M4 configuration with a 1.5-5x20 circle dot).  Both have 1/9 twists and shoot 1/4 and 1/2 moa respectively.  Never a FTF or FTE.  I chose DPMS because of the reviews... and price.

Actually Cerberus Capital Management, a large holding company owns Remington, Bushmaster and DPMS.  They bought all three companies in last couple years so it is not one brand that owns another it is one company that owns all the three of the brands...

I have a RR and 3 Frankensteins, The RR is nice but I really don't think it's all that much superior to the rest if any. I would look into Model 1 sales. Good prices for the complete guns or uppers and seems to be good quality. Dtech makes a good one, just depends on your pocketbook. The one thing I have noticed is you are the kind of guy that likes to add stuff on and change parts like stocks etc you might just want to build one.

I personally have a couple AR's that I have put together myself.  The last one is a Stag Arms lower with a polished trigger along with a DPMS 20" varmint upper.  It was suprisingly accurate when I took it out this last weekend with cheap ammo.  Once I have time to work up some loads it will be very accurate.  I think I am in it $740 for the entire gun and I really do not think "I" could shoot any better with a more expensive gun.

I read that Bushmaster builds all the 223 models for Remington sales and DPMS builds all the other calibers and the R25. don't know fer sure tho.
