There must be something to this because I saw a forest service post that was rubbed up here in WA. I would put a camera out on it but I think the area gets too much human traffic and I would end up with a stolen camera.

The posts the USFS use are pressure treated and have a very distinct odor, a little different then creosote. It took me several years to locate a post on an abandoned road to hang a trailcam on, was afraid of theft or vandalism on the ones on drivable roads.Here's a few pics of other road signs that have been hammered for several years. Several were rubbed in half and fell over.
