I'll second the Swift Scirrocos. Trophy Bonded Bear Claws. Swift  A-Frames. Barnes TTSX. The new Nosler E-Tip looks good but I have no experience with it.
If you like Nosler Partitions, try Swift A-Frames. They have a bonded core/jacket up front. Better penetration because of better weight retention and shoot every accurately.

With that gun... I"d go with the 180 grain TTSX with a 453 or the 200 with a 423. They will flat out do the job.... at under 500 yards the BC will hardly matter anyways.... IMO. I will check a Calculator though...

I use two and choose 500 as the max shooting range:

210 Berger VLD - RL 25 87.9 grains, Nosler Brass = 2950 FPS BUT with a BC of .0631.. that is one STAIT flier.

200 Barnes TTSX - RL 25 88 grains, Federal Nickle plated brass = 3050 with a BC of .0546 BC.. this is one strait flier as well

.. I think 180s are on the low end for a RUM.. that is a starter weight for me.

Going to try out the 200 grain Nosler Accubond next.. that is a great hybrid beteen the Barnes and the Berger.

You can't really go wrong here as long as you dont use a ballistic tip.. I know some do, but its more for thinned game animals.

A frame bullets like Partitions, etc are great too but they lack a BT.. and from 300 to 500 with any wind, those bullets will drop or move compared to a nice high BC boat tail bullet.

If the BC's stated earlier are correct.... if you go with a 180 Barnes TTSX at 500 yds you will get about 29 inches of drop. (if zeroed at 250)..

With the Etip with a 523 BC, you get about 27.7 inches of drop...

Now...at 1000 yards, the BC starts to pay dividends... you get about 246" of drop with the Barnes and about 2 Feet less with the Etip...

At 500 though....just pic a well constructed bullet that shoots little groups out of your gun!

Good info on "drop" But what I also like to consider with the BC of the bullet is it's ability to buck wind, a nice high BC bullet will stay on target better in crosswinds vs a lower BC bullet... in E Wa where I hunt Muleys this is super important to me.. plenty of cross canyon shots and winds pick up there a ton.

I have killed 7 elk with the 180tsx all performed as the magazine ad would have you believe, and 2 with the 180 scirocco. I had great luck with it too, they were just hard to get back then. either will do you well. I killed this bull with 1 shot right square in the arsehole using a 180tsx. it was 100ish yards away and about to bail off a cliff. the bullet traveled the whole lenght of the bull and stopped in the sternum. try that with a lesser bullet.

Very good point MD... The 453 of the Barnes 180 is pretty good still....

High Country, I've shot 5 bulls with the TSX or TTSX's and like you, have had text book performance. I am not a Bench Rest or Long Range Shooter, but at "normal" hunting distances (out to 350-400) I am getting very acceptable accurracy from my Barnes.

Have you shot "groups" with yours? How tight?

I think the "best" is a matter of opinion.  The 180 gr. Scirocco and 175 Berger VLD have preformed flawlessly for me.  However, coming out of the big RUM, I'm thinking the 190 or 210 VLD might be the "best".  I honestly haven't given Barnes nor the Accubond much of a chance, as I've had better results with the others with less effort.  I recently bought another 300RUM specifically for the 210 VLD for "winning the war with wind".  I think I'm going to like it.
