How often trail cams get stolen...
« on: February 21, 2012, 07:55:27 PM »
I have a bear box over the trail camera that is locked on there good + screwed into the tree, and then a locked cable through the bear box/around the tree. Pretty sturdy...

Now I know if someone really wanted to be sh*tty they could take an axe to the small trees I hang mine up on but I'm just wondering, is it a pretty regular occurrence for them to be stolen at least once in your time of hanging them up over the years with this kind of protection?

Are the ones that are stolen I've read about on here usually unprotected?  :dunno:

I have had cameras out since 2004. I have not had one stolen yet. They have been ripped down by bears, but I always found them.
I dont put them around town or where anyone would be able to find them. Anyone that would find them would more than likely be a guy like me, and not mess with them I would hope.

I had one stolen last year that was unprotected but well camo'd. Like you said, if they want it they will take it. I now put mine deep in the middle of my new area with new security boxes that I made outta 3/16" steel and lag bolted to the tree with 5" bolts. Another thing I dont do anymore is put them by a fresh rub because if it attracts my attention it will attract someone elses. I try to find where the animals are coming from and set up on the trail. I also dont get the expensive ones for the fact if it gets stolen Im not out $200

It depends on where they are at.

THere are a lot of walkers in the woods out here so I keep em cheap and now i'm switching to IR to make them even lower profile.

It's like strapping a 100 dollar bill to a tree to me.  :o

One of the best things about the smaller cams......smaller and concealable.

If you put them in high traffic areas its going to get stolen.

I've had one stolen each of the past two years.

Both were in fairly high traffic areas and neither was protected form theft.

I guess I naively thought people would respect another person's property....

I'll have to o a better job of hiding them, I guess.

I've been doing trail cams for 2 years now and finally, just last month, had one stolen. I've been keeping a minimum of four in the woods continuously for about 1 year now. Before that I was a little more sporadic, and it was more of a summertime thing. I have yet to secure a camera in any way. I just try to put them in locations that don't get a lot of human traffic. But I also don't have any high dollar cams. The one that got stolen was a Tasco that I got for $40, so it didn't hurt too bad. And I got a full year of continuous use out of it, so I figure I got my money's worth. Some cameras only last a year before they quit working.

I've had a few stolen in the past. I try to make it hard to see them and even I have a tough time finding where there are later.

I mostly consider them gone when I first get them and if they last then great!
I'm not sure.
