2nd year, first ever turkey
« on: April 15, 2012, 09:40:27 AM »
Had an awesome hunt today.  Did a lot of turkey hunting last year with very experienced friends but had horrible luck/situations.  Today totally made up for it.

Last night we located a gobbler and learned he was with some hens.  We were within 100 yards or so of them and heard the group of hens roost in a tree and the Tom roosted on the other side of a clearing.  Our goal was to get in there before light, get set up in between them.

This morning got right in the middle of the clearing and waited for day light.  Tom started gobbling at anything and everything around him.  We never even broke out our calls.  The hens landed about 10 yards behind us and the Tom was about 60 yards straight in front.  Hens talked to him and did the calling for us.  He came in strutting and I got him about 25-30 yards.

Was such an amazing experience and I can't wait to get back out.    Big thanks to my partner, Warhorse.  Without him it would have never happened.  Just glad I didn't goof the shot.  Bird had a 9.5 inch beard.

And can still make church!

Nice work.  Thats the best when you get one right out of the gates.

Great job man!  Beautiful bird!!
Lord , we've been here on days before
and often times you've let me score
Now do you think that on this day
you could send a gobbler down my way?
And , if not , just let me say--
you've given me another day
to hunt the bird I love the best.
I don't mind sharing with the rest

That is cool when the hens do the calling. Love it when it all comes together.
