North River and Minot Peak units
« on: August 06, 2012, 10:28:50 PM »
Can anyone help me on good places to start in these units?  I will be rifle hunting this year since I bow hunt in Oregon.  I was also wondering if the roads are open for rifle season or do I need to take in my bike and cart?  I plan on ordering some topo maps and going scouting.  It says red dot means no vehicle or motorized traffic on the a and b line roads so can you still bike in?  I'm a Senior Chief in the Navy and don't have lots of time so any help in getting started is appreciated.

That's not a problem.  It is funny how hunters often don't help each other.

have not seen too many elk in Minot. Never rifle hunted down there either and i know the gate situation has changed alot down there. As far as North River goes I had a bioligist tell me quite a few years back to consentrate north of north river. Never made it back thou to check it out. Ive heard there is a good heard down by the prison too

I've heard the same.  From the Prison out to John's River is pretty loaded with elk.  Never hunted it though.  Don't know anything on Minot.

Should I try further south like in the Fall River or closer to the Columbia River?  They all look good.  Anyone up to going scouting and maybe shooting a bear?

honestly...there are not that many elk in minot peak.  They are very few and far between.  There are however some dandy bucks in there.  Havent spent alot of time in North River so no help there.  Fall river has a few elk around there but its pretty brushy.

Right now is a perfect time to get out and scout for yourself. The elk are out and about, easy to spot and get a good idea of how many elk are around.
