Looking for a quality bushcraft knife

Im tired of buying inferior blades that don't hold an edge or are impossible to resharpen... I've been eyeing some hand made Scandinavian knives and I thought I'd see what you guys can suggest or have experience with...

The one I'm looking at is a karesuando boar that comes with a firesteel and sharpener but I've also seen some others.... What do you guys have?

If I run across a Kershaw outcast I'll probably pick that up, been wanting one for a while but it's been replaced by a "camp 10" which I know nothing about.

I have been really happy with my last few outdoor edge knives/butcher sets. I plan to pick a new one up this year. After running my knives threw 30+ animals last year I think I have got my money out of them already

I like Grohmann.  They have the D.H. Russell belt knife, my dad still has his original one.  Best guess on my part is that it's now about 37 years old, if he bought it new.

What size of knife do you have in mind?

Any particular steel you prefer?

Kydex or leather sheath?

There are allot of choices.

There are several knife makers I use  that are very reasonable when it comes to custom bush style, survival, camp knives etc.

A couple examples. This is a "Camp/Bush" knife I had Tim OLT build me out of A2. Double Cryo tempered(69 RC). 10" blade , 15" overall. On the large side, more in the "Chopper" class.



I had Tim also do me this large drop point in S30V Stainless. The smaller knife is one of his Montana Creek Hunters.







This is a heavy GP8 by Tim OLT in the same steel and Cryo as the above knife with a diamond hone. You can also get a fire steel loop. These knives can be ordered in any steel or handle material combination you prefer.





Here's a pic for size reference, compared to a 4" 1911.



This is a standard OLT GP8, I really like the size and feel of this knife. I had it done in 154 CM Stainless.



This is a knife I have in the works, it should be finished next week. I sent a sketch of my idea of a survival style knife to Dale Howe of Howe Mountain Knives. He ran with it and sent me the pics of the steel ready to be fit with the scales(handles). The steel is 154 CM stainless, 6" blade and a heavy Swedge. The grips/scales with stop short, so that the back of the Knife with the lanyard hole can be used as a impact tool.

Then there are some makers such as Charles May, David Winston and Gene Ingram that make some really nice stuff. Great guys to deal with. I really like the knives I have ordered from them.

I really like the idea of the orange handle on a camp knife 

I use an old SOG SEAL for a camp knife. Still holds a decent edge and takes lots of abuse.

I use a helle knife and have bought several from Ragnar at ragweedforge.  The ones I use have a sandwiched blade.  Just as sharp as it was before after skinning and quartering my elk.  Very sharp.

the saw sucks, as it bottoms out about a 1/4 inch in the wood.  The saw portion isn't cutting as wide as the blade is.


The chopper portion is "ok" at chopping small brush out the way or making a quick shooting stick. The blade tends to bounce off though so you have to have a pretty straight on swing to get it to cut


didn't try to dig a trench, cant imagine trying to dig with it as it'd tear your hands up


34 bucks or so at walmart I figured what the hell - might see if they'll take it back


or I might just grind off the saw portion and make it curved like a slight kurkuri - and sharpen the "digger" portion and make it a morphadite tanto kukuri

These are my pick, love them both.  The modified fiskars is really really useful.  I always have a SAK craftsman and Leatherman Wave along for small chores.
