Bullet Drop
« on: September 08, 2012, 09:00:09 AM »
How accurate is the manufactures bullet drop chart? I zeroed at 200 and the 100 is just a little over -1 (about -1.2)… cant get a shot of just yet out past 200 at my range, just wondering what you guys think? I’ll reach out and try 300-500 when I’m out in the sticks next for some results, just some pre-thought… (i know it will very some on the rifle variables, just how much i'm not sure is normal)

Hornady Superformance 300wm 165 grain
Box hold-over shows:
-1@100
0@200
6@300
16@400
32@500
3,260 fps muzzle velocity
3,893 ft-lb. muzzle energy

In my experience they are fairly close. I prefer to use a ballistics program and chrony and dial it in instead of holding over. The farther out the target is the harder to judge your holdover.

In my experience they are generally accurate, but there are variables the manufacturer cannot control such as barrel length, barrel characteristics, temperature, elevation, and so on. If you're shooting live big game I'd recommend limiting the shot distance to no more than 300 yards until you've shot paper at longer distances. Even at 300 yards, other variables come into play: the inherent accuracy of the firearm/ammo combination, your ability to shoot, and so forth. When you pull the trigger there should be no doubt in your mind that the bullet will be lethal!

The data on the ammo boxes are a good "Rule of Thumb" for that ammo. Its just like the gas milage of a car,, your resaults may very..Your not shooting in a controled enviorment... You'll just have to punch some holes in paper to see how this ammo reacts from your rifle..

Oh and I have never seen a bullet that gains hight after the far zero..they always drop

thanks all... thats what i kinda figured on the "hold over" numbers on the ammo box... never realy shot out past a few hundered so this is a new fun for me.
superformance seems to be a great box ammo... im just not into reloading right now. on that note, I'm off to shoot paper!

thats plus one i believe, at 100, probably a typo...plus 1.5 @ 100 should give ya a tiny bit better wiggle room.

thats a negative holdover... if you zero at 200, then you hold your cross hairs 1.5" under your target at 100... thus the negative holdover @100
did i say that right... guess i should have talked "hold over" numbers, and not called it "bullet drop"

In my opinion, the rifle should be 2 high at 100 yards..........(maybe even 2.5").  Then zero would be at 250 or so.  That should put you at about -3 at 300.  That way you're good to hold right on out to 300 yards.   That's how I sight mine in anyway, others may sight in differently. :twocents:

thankyou for repeating exactly what i said., lol. well sort of...1.5 or two inches high at 100 gives you a 200 or 250 yard zero. in other words what i am trying to say is no need for hold over, or under...anything between zero and 225 or so yards will put your bullet within 2 inches or so of "point of aim".

Remember one thing when looking at factory ballistics:

They are usually using a 26" 'TEST BARREL' typically for ammo testing.  Not a 20, 22, or 24 in. rifle barrel...   makes a world of difference in ballistics..
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.

the only true test is to shoot it. why take a shot that you havn't practiced at ? shooting 400 yards is tougher than one think , things like angle , trigger pull and rest make a huge differance , never forget windage a 10mph crosswind will dramatically effect the impact . while playing with my huskima 5x20 and the wind holds I was very surprized my round was around 8-10 inches off center at 400 yards . in the 300 wm a 180 grain bullet should be more stable out of a factory barrell .
