Best place to get tires in Yakima?
« on: September 04, 2012, 06:23:53 PM »
I haved been shopping for new tires for my 91 ranger as they are 90% bald.  I know I can get a good tire From Rj's here in town but need fellow hunters opinions. Les Schwab on 1st  is trying to sell me car tires when I have a truck :bash:.  I will try to go get quotes from the one in selah.

What is the best place to go
6 ply or 4 ply for my ford ranger
thanks.

8ply if you can afford to do so.  with 4 ply you will be fixing flats at some point.

Try craigslist.

If no luck there check and see if there are any used tire stores in Yakima.

I have bought quite a few tires off craigslist and also from used tire stores. I refuse to pay new tire prices for tires on my '88 Bronco II and our '97 Toyota Corolla.

Just a few days ago I got 4 snow tires (non-studded) for our Corolla for $140, on wheels, balanced and ready to go.

I think 6 ply would be best but I think you could get by fine with 4 ply tires, depending on the tire. Rangers aren't that heavy so you definitely don't need 8 ply.

Not a Walmart fan but I was shopping for tires and they had some goodyear mud terrain tires that looked pretty good for the sale price. Would have been like 650 for 31/10.5/15 for the set mount and balanced. Found a great used set on Craigslist instead for 300.
Shut up and Hunt!

This isn't in Yakima but just an example of the kind of deals you can get:

Bias ply tires had the old 4,6,8,10 ply construction, where the tire actually had that many layers of material. More layers ment more puncture resistance.

Radials aren't constructed the same way and carry a ply equivalency rating. A "D" rated radial (8 ply equivalent) won't have any more puncture resistance than a 6 ply "C" rated radial.

In his case there is absolutely no reason to go any more than a "C" rated tire.

By "trying to sell me car tires" I'm guessing they're showing you "P" or passenger rated tires?

That doesn't necessarily mean the tires are made for a car. That just means they won't have the load carrying capacity of a "C" (6ply rating) LT tire.

Unless you're always hauling heavy loads (not likely with a Ranger) or towing frequently where a "C" rated LT tire would be beneficial,I'd be tempted to stick with a 4 ply tire.

As far as Les Schwab, unless it was an emergency,I wouldn't buy tires from them. They're generally 25-30% more than a place like Discount Tire or Costco.

you can check out Discount tire online, the online price is the same as the store price.  I would go with the 6 ply if it was me.

franks tire in selah is pretty good, kenny is pretty forgiving when working with a budget. Just ask if he has any used ones, at the very least he can usually get some pretty fast. Hes been a family friend for a while and he was able to get me some for less than 150 for my ranger.

For a Ranger , you can get away with a 4ply if you don't tow, or haul anything real heavy. I do a 6ply just low air pressure 30-32psi for a smooth ride..  They do make All Terrain 4ply tires. Shop around ask questions.

I had an '84 Ranger and a '91 Ranger, and the only problem I ever had with "Plain old truck tires" is one time when I picked up a 3/8' bolt.  Went right through the steel belts.  Almost made it to the tire store until the bolt flew out and the tire went flat.  I wouldn't waste money on expensive tires unless you plan on towing or hauling a heavy load.  All 8-ply tires will do is give you a crappy ride.  And Rangers weren't made to haul much anyway.  If your Ranger has the 2.9 V6, don't ever let it go.  Even if you have to put a new engine in it, It's a better vehicle than the junk they sell now.  If I find a good '91 Ranger, I'll buy it and sell the '07 Canyon piece of junk I have now!
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

Anyone buy these tires yet? Boy I am tempted. They would be great on my Bronco II.

I agree if you or your mom have a costco card, scratch that it's worth paying for the costco card just to buy tires.  You will NOT find better prices on BFG tires and the quality is second to none.

You could go to costco and buy a membership and tires and you will still save money.
