What are the odds, group permit question
« on: September 24, 2012, 10:10:07 PM »
Any idea what the odds of drawing a group 2nd deer tag if 2 people had 2 points and one had none in an area where the average number of points to draw the tag was 3 and they have 50 tags for the area?

Odds are worth applying.  You'd likely draw.............

I don't think avg points means a whole lot anyway, but you'd have an avg of 3 applying in that group.

 :dunno: (2 + 2 + 0) / 3 = 1.33.  I believe that rounds down to 1, but best case would be it rounds up to 2.

Just wondering because each of my boys has 2 points and a legit chance at pulling individually next year.  I cashed out this year and I don't want to drag their chances down

Damn.  I am up 1.5 hrs after my usual bedtime.  I guess I don't do math so well when I'm tired. :o  But, I'd still say you have a good shot at it, because like I said avg points don't mean that much.

Well I screwed up too. No one has zero points, so your group application would have five points, not four. That means it probably would round to 2 for the group. That means you get four names in the hat ((2x2).

Good luck. But may I ask why you're asking now?

Just wondering.  No real reason for asking now.  So, if I don't have zero points, I'd assume because I'd apply next spring for what would be the first time basically, giving me one point.  If that's the case, my boys each have 2 in the bank now and apply for the 3rd time in the spring so, by that reasoning, we'd go in with 3+3+1, correct?

Yes, you are correct. You must include the application year in the point total.

So that'd give our group just over 2 points to apply with.  Cool.  I got drawn on my 2nd attempt this year.  Thanks Bob

It also depends on the number of applicants for that hunt.

Bottom line for me is the level of desire I have to hunt with a particular group.  If I'd rather NOT hunt the unit than have a chance with the group, I'll burn my points.

None of you have many points at risk, though, so why not just go for it?
