Private land in GMU 204 question
« on: September 18, 2012, 02:56:10 PM »
Hey, just had a quick question regarding property in GMU 204. I have the opportunity to hunt 20 acres between Tonasket and Republic during rifle season. The property is at 4500 ft. I haven't seen the property before, besides google earth pictures, and probably wont get a chance to scout it before the season since it's a pretty good drive.

I was just wondering if 20 acres in that area would be a decent enough size to hunt, and if the deer will be up that high around mid-late October. I've never hunted Okanogan County before, but have heard good things about 204.

Thanks for any info, really appreciate it

Lots of surrounding pressure f you're only on 20 acres. A guy could over that in 20 min.  Any buck for whiteys though!
What would life be without the thrill of the hunt?

A LOT will depend on the 20 acres. What is around it? What is the surrounding pressure like? Is there something on that 20 to bring the deer in, like water? There really are a lot of variables to a question like this. At the same time we have 55 acres in unit 204 that we generally get at least one deer a year off of. Sometimes we get none other times we get two. Thinking about it in the last 7 years I believe we have taken 11 or so deer off the place, that does not account for what the locals/neighbors take when we are not there  :bash:.

Depending on where it lies between Tonasket and Republic there maybe some good state land nearby making it well worth the trip just to really see what is there  :twocents:.

I have access to multiple 400 acre sections in 204, and still end up hunting a lot on adjacent  state and forest land :dunno:
Economy failure = Too many people spending money they don't have on things they don't need to impress people they don't like.

My family has around 1000 acres in the 204 and we take the majority of our deer in 2 areas of our property. One area is on a mountain side and the other is on a ridge. What they have in common is that they are close to water, have an area to graze and they have very good cover. If that 20 acres has that then you should be able to pull alteast one buck off of it. Also it doesn't hurt to put some minerals for them too.
Hunting is always an adventure, always enjoy your time in the woods or in the field!
