girlfriends 2012 whitetail
« on: October 21, 2012, 10:31:44 AM »
Jamie flat hammered this buck at last light last night! we had been hunting hard last weekend and saturday 10-20, and passed numerous smaller bucks. we got into two very big bucks in the morning but juct coulsd not get set up for a shot jamie was comfortable taking.
we rested for mid day and came back out around 4. i spotted this buck in some real thick CRP that the deer like to hide in (you can only see antler tips when they stand up. after a few times seeing this deer we determined he was a shooter and we closed the distance to 150 yards from his position. we then waited for an hour with nothing happening. i then decided to go "bird dog" for Jamie. i snuck into the bucks bed and he busted at about 6-8 yards and ran directly toward Jamie and passed her at 30 yards but she doesnt feel comfortable taking a moving shot so she passed. i watched the deer stop just down the draw so we snuck doen there and spotted the buck on the far treeline. i stopped the buck with a grunt at 220 yards and she bangflopped it with a 90 grain accubond from my 243. went in right in front of the close shoulder and exited right behind the opposite shoulder.
this was a very old deer whose teeth were worn to the gum line.
the buck had healed from a broken back at some point as his spone had a 2 inch kink in it about mid back and there was a softball sized puss pocket on the tenderloins  :puke: .
he had played the game numerous times and was not planning on leaving that brush pocket anytime in the daylight. but we got him!

thanks for looking!

Congrats to her! Looks like a dandy! Hope you were able to save some of the back strap. Puss in meat is nasty for sure! :puke:

Wondering if you had any clue as to what may have caused the damage to his back?  Maybe an old wound, bullet fragment that was festered?   Was it close enough to the spine injury site to be related or maybe something from a seperate incident?

The nasty part was right along the spine injury. It was related. I as expecting to find a bullet or broadhead but didn't dig around in the gross part much. We lost both tenderloins  :'( and about 6 inches of backstrap. I was very careful and may have lost too much but it grossed me out. Lots of scar tissue also. Should have taken pics.  :bash:
oh well. Still got plenty of meat. Whatever made the injury went in at a sharp angle toward the hips through the spine and came out through the tenderloin. Surprised it didn't paralyze the buck like a spine hit usually does.

Awesome!

I had something similar happen with a hog I shot in Texas. Pure nastiness!
