Newbie question?

Just what are the averages for  getting a coyote to come to a set? 1 in 5, 1 in 10? I hunted pretty much all day, I called in a doe, magpies and several ravens but no yotes. It was pretty amazing how ravens could key into the location of the caller, from such a great distance.

all together id say iget a coyote about 1 in 3...but i spend the time looking for good stands, some days it seems like i call a coyote on every stand and some days i call all day and never see a coyote!

  over all average for guys who call a LOT, I'd bet closer to 1:25. I figure at least 12-15 sets a day some days no luck at all, some days average 3-4 a day. best ever 9 in one day. On a trip calling if I can get 2 a day I am very very happy, one will keep me hunting! I am starting to think closer to 1:35 over the last 30 years.  mebbe 1:100 really

Probably 1/10 for an average. Will get hot and get a bunch in a short time then have a  dry spell. On one now.

You probably DID get some Coyotes to come in.... but for some reason, may not have seen 'em.

Happens to me.
One time we called all day, atleast 6 different sets.
Never saw a single coyote.
Then.... on the last set, I saw a Coyote sanding perfectly still about 60 yards away.
Never saw him sneak in.
And of course, as soon as I locked eyes on him...... poof! he was gone. Never saw him run away either.
Just saying that you don't all ways "SEE" them, but they're there.

if your calling in birds,keep at it, because its working, keep a sharp eye out, consider the wind when picking a spot, camo camo camo, face and hands especially. dont necessarily need to blend in, just look like a piece of wood or junk etc etc that they are used to seeing.

I wear camo but I do not think it is necessary. Actually, I know its not necessary. Several times I have called in coyotes and bears without any camo whatsoever. When I do wear camo I dont cover my face and I only wear gloves when its cold. My gun isn't camoed either. Gearhead, I am not looking to fight or argue with you but camo is way down on my list when I think of things that are going to make me a successful caller. After sharing my opinion with you Hilltop, you will never go wrong with what gearhead said as far as camo everything you can but I would spend more time finding a good place to setup, play the wind right, make sure you have a good view of where you expect to call them from. In my opinion, movement is the killer of setups. Although if you setup good you can get away with quite a bit of movement also.

First off, Sunday was a fickle day for wind , but I figured a bad day of hunting with less than perfect wind, was better than no hunting at all.
 In retrospect, I may have schooled more dogs, than learned anything myself.

The birds coming to the call, left me with the same impression.....
The original question was  asked in a general nature, so lets not get in squabble over someones opinion.

They say that not every Magpie has a coyote, but every coyote has a Magpie.  If you see a Magpie, there is a chance there is a coyote close by.

no arguements brother, lol...im kinda spoiled and where i hunt shots average 25 yards, (hand calls) quite often 5 yards..( whitman county) .its been my experience, and i have said this alot to friends, if anything, atleast camo your face and hands, i think blue jeans with a red shirt would most likely work, (although i havnt tried it), but they can really key in on that face, its like a head light. ever see guys in a distant duck blind?, their faces really stand out even though, they are in full camo, the other is hands, kinda makes ya look like a flagger, every time you move that free hand to scratch or handle a call etc etc. Half the coyotes i shoot, i never see come in, i simply look out of the corner of my eye, and see the thing standing there close by.
all that said, it is fun though isnt it.

Since we are still friendly , I will elaborate on the face mask and gloves. I have worn a face mask at times but I can never get used to lack of vision when I wear one. Also the tight ones seem to make it hard to breathe pulling air in through the mask. So I quit using one and havn't had a problem. The gloves make it hard for me to run the remote for my caller so I don't uuse gloves unless its cold. Then I use some fairly thin ones and suffer for a while!

its not a fashion show, so anything works. i use a cheap net mostly, the kind you can pull down over your neck, i cut a large hole below the eye piece for calling and breathing. with some nets, ya just throw your hat inside, the bill keeps the eye area hanging nice and a little farther from your face. but im a hand caller. i can see the advantage of having an electronic call set out a ways infront of you. im just too cheap to get one. im shooting dogs at 25 and under, in the Palouse area, so every little bit helps me. Every area is different, and i believe in different strokes for different folks, so not argueing one bit.

I don't camo up but I do make sure I have something to breakup my outline, Behind some sage brush, snuggled into some blowdowns however I am wearing an old pair of insulated carhart coveralls that have taken on the color of dead grass...  When we get snow on the ground I took an old sheet and added some brown and black paint to it cut a hole in the middle and wear it like a poncho when I get to a stand...

lol funny the opinions on camo, im sure they all work! i camo up really well with kings desert camo but i dont worry about sitting in cover just  make sure im not ridgelined, i have sat in cut fields where i really feel like a stand out, biggest thing is movement! thats all coyotes look for is movement, not a person, they dont pick you up until you move, move very slow, even if you dont see a acoyote doesnt mean one aint staring at you, i honestly think peoples worst mistake while coyote hunting is they move too much! sit as still as you possiblly can
