Late Buck in 407
« on: November 11, 2012, 10:25:37 AM »
Hey guys, its been a long time since anyone in my family has hunted modern deer on the wetside, but Dad is this year and didn't connect during the general season. I was curious if anyone had any input on North Sound late buck opportunities. Please PM me, I know how blacktail hunters are about their areas, and rightfully so. I am very familiar with the boundaries and areas, and hunt late archery blacktail every year, just not in an area open to late modern. Its probably been 15 years since anyone in our family has hunted 407 so any input is appreciated. Would be willing to trade some info for a fishing trip or something along those lines. Thanks and have a great day!

I live close to a gate in 407 that I bear hunted quite a bit this year.  I had several trail cams up in the area had numerous does and a few bears walk by, but not a single buck on the cam or spotted in my 15 or so short trips back there this year to scout and bear hunt.

So Dad and I hit the woods Saturday morning. We hunted an area that him and my uncles used to hunt all the time, but haven't in probably 15 years since it went to shotgun only. Dad doesn't have a shotgun so I picked up some slugs for my 20ga  Benelli. Was very impressed with how well they grouped at 50 yards. Knew we wouldn't be taking any shots further than that so Dad was dialed!

We got to our area and split up in this unit. He was going to move down and sit in this little bottleneck clearing while I pushed through the woods above it, hoping to move an animal out in front of him. I gave him about 15 minutes after we split up to get settled into his spot before I started moving. I had barely taken 5 steps into the woods when BANG! 1 shot from Dad means dead deer! I moved through the woods nice and easy just in case it wasn't him and came out into the clearing to him already done field dressing the dang thing! He said he had just made it to his spot and was getting ready to hunker when he saw this guy stand up out of his bed about 45 yards away looking right at him! All he had was a head shot so he took it and nailed him in the left eye and out the ear. Done deal.

I'm very happy for my dad to have gotten this deer for a few reasons. One, he has had limited success over the last 15 years or so because he worked so hard to get my brother and I into animals. Its his time now. 2nd, the last deer any of our family killed here was by my Uncle, who passed away from cancer a couple of years ago, so it was kind of bittersweet to say the least. I'm proud of you Dad, way to get it done O'Connor style.

Oh and sorry about the windpipe. Due to the shot placement, he felt the need to bleed the animal, and I don't have photoshop to cover it up. Hope no one is offended.

Blacktail really are my favorite deer. They've got so much character and are just cool customers in general  8)
