Is this a Cougar print?
« on: December 31, 2012, 04:23:59 PM »
Found this on my property.  Was about half the size of my shoe print.  I think it's a cougar.  Any thoughts?

How big of a k9 could it be?   My male german shepherd's print was about half this size when I compared them.

That's what I thought, too, but I think the claw mark is just a depression in the dirt.  I saw a Cougar in this same part of my property last winter.  I have two goats in a shed close to where this print was found.  Here is the unedited picture before I rotated and cropped it..  Maybe this shows better size...

I have to agree that this is a K-9 print.  Saint bernards, leonberger, and malamutes are just a few breeds that I can think of that have a muc larger paw than a shepherd.

Ok ok ... I've been outvoted..  For arguments sake, I'll agree it's a k9 of sorts.

I'm going to have to resort to setting up a game cam for further verification.

this is the best way to tell if its cat or canine.  If you can draw an x through the print without intersecting the back (large) pad then it is k9.  If your x goes throught the pad its a cat

Here's a photo of a coyote and a cougar track side by side.  The coyote is in the upper right, and the cougar is at the bottom of the photo.  It shows the drawing an X thing that BLRman was talking about.

Bring a GPS!  It's awkward to have to eat your buddies!

The only time i have seen claw marks in cat tracks they were in snow and you could just make out the tips.
