trout fishing

Has anyone ever used jigs for trout? I just them under a bobber for steelhead and salmon  and was thinking a small jig with a worm or perrywinkle may work? Has anyone tryed this method of fishing before and if so how well did it work.

I had a buddy that would fish that exact set up from a float tube. He would take a couple of beers with him in the summer and kick out to the area he wanted to fish. Then, sipping a cool one, he would basically drag it behind him kicking himself along. Said it worked great. I would think if you were bank fishing you could do the same thing by casting out and slowing working it back in a fan pattern.

i catch cut throat with a bobber and fly all the time and cast out and sllowly retreave in and it slays them every time.  Do you know what kind of jig he was using?

i know its a bit early to start thinging about trout fishing but man i have missed  it and my son is starting to get mre interested in fishing with dad so im super excited  about it this year.

He used all types....everything from steelhead type jigs to crappie jigs tipped with a minnow where allowed. He would alos put a dab of Powerbait on there. The weight would keep it down just fine.

i may just start making my own jigs i got a store were i live that sells all sorts of jig making stuff.  if i can do it right i may just make my own steelhead and salmon jigs.

should work fine if the trout are there & are hanging around that depth. used to crappie fish alot & would use a small jig tipped with a small strip of perch meat.
at times if the trout were there we'd catch more of them than crappie.
imagine the blast we had with ultra lite crappie gear & getting into a bunch of heafty trout.

were you fishing in  a lake or a river?   i was thinking about using a jig rig when we catch bait fish in westport we catch 10 inch salmon or maybe there trout not sure...

Catch them all the time while I'm trying to catch bass and crappie when I visit my dad on the westside using a jighead and Berkeley Gulp Minnows.

mostly lake or reservoir for me, but aren't you getting a little to personabile? asking such questions as to how & where ? ill forgive you as you are giving up your secrets to the bbq world (witch i really enjoy by the way)
most of my panfish fishing has been at osullivan & local lakes & ponds around that area. used to live up above the lake & was out on a regular basis.

There are a few lakes that arfe open year round and you may not catch the numbers but i have had some killer days on the water during the winter and put some nice stringers together. But you better have some warm clothes under the rain gear!

if its open, small flasher, wedding ring, 12" leader & night crawler trailing.. is your best hope for this time if year. and troll fast, but pretty cold for lake fish, youd be better off fishing steelies

I do all the time. Beaded nymphs, streamers, or egg patterns. if the water isnt very clear or really deep I use a strike indicator as well. Not very much action but still a lot of fun

That works great you could replace the flasher with popper gear. And for a wedding ring I always use the double wammies with the bigger blades and re-tie them with 5 pound leader and smaller hooks. Another thing to try is trolling straight power bait at slower speeds. If neither of those work throw dynamite that always works!

Never too early for fishing!  Depending on where you are there are lots of winter options.  A little far from you but Lake roosevelt or Rufus Woods are two great places for trout fishing in the winter.

How do you get the trout to bite in cold water temps?

I used worm tipped jigs in creeks and rivers. I get pinpoint accuracy under overhanging brush and I know exactly where it is in the drift at all times. I found this to be better than the business end trailing in the current someplace 2 ft. away from the weight.
