Another newb needing direction
« on: February 01, 2013, 10:56:22 AM »
HI!
Well, thanks for reading.  I've never gone elk hunting, and I don't know anybody who does it.  I inherited a 7mm from my father last year, and failed at deer hunting this year, though I did put a buddy on a gorgeous 3x3 in Coyle.  I never did see the other one I knew was in there (lots of good rub lines, and no easy access).
Anyways, I love hiking and 1-3 night backpacking trips, and would like to get out and start scouting for areas on my hikes.  I have March 15 and 16 planned for an overnight trip, but no destination yet.  I live in kitsap, and would like to hunt elk in Coyle or Olympic if possible, but I think olympic is special permit only.  I would also love to go down near raineer I think, because I hear lots of elk are in that area, maybe winston or riderwood or one of those that has some non motorized access and a chance to get away from the crowds I've heard (read) so much about.  Again, Coyle would be my first choice if I had any clue what to look for, or even the knowledge that there were elk to hunt there.
Ultimately my hope is to find an area that is closed to drive in access.  I would like to ride a mountain bike in 5-15 miles on logging roads, and maybe even bring a bike trailer, like for hauling todlers, or elk meat and backpacks.
All of that being said, does anybody have pointers for where to go?  Thanks so much for your input! obviously not looking for your honey holes, just some areas to start "scout hiking" for 2013 rifle season.  last thing, probably me and 1 other newb doing this together.

Hmmm... I guess that's how I learn. Ask about anything you want, just not about elk locations.  :chuckle:  Well that's ok.  I'll start running around in the woods.
