7mm weatherby magnum

Looking to buy my first rifle and leaning towards this rifle.   Found one at a Cabelas on the East coast.  Any personal experience and advice on where to purchase would be greatly appreciated.

I have several Mark V's, but not in 7mm, thats a sweet round though. Mine are ultralightweights, but the accumarks are sweet if you don't mind added weight.

I've become a huge fan of gunbroker.com for ordering specific firearms... once you figure out what you want.

It's my understanding that the 7mm Wby offered the least gain of any of the Wby cartridges over standard factory say 7mm Rem Mag.
I would go with 7mm Rem Mag like has been said if I wanted a 7mm Magnum...If you want a Wby cal. I would look at the  257Wby(my favorite),300 Wby would be a better choice. Maybe a 270Wby but 270 is of no interest to me

7mm Reg Mag is definitely a better choice, look at a Winchester Model 70, you won't be disappointed!

Can someone dumb it down a little more for me.  I'm a bowhunter and guns are a Chinese language.  Why am I leaning towards this gun.  I have borrowed it three times and shot three animals.  Each one looked like it got rolled by a steam truck.  I think that is the caliber.  I like the wood finish.  I'm also a little superstitious, the gun has done me well.  I offered to buy my dad's, but he told me to pound sand.  Will I notice any differences between the rem and the weatherby?  Are the rounds identical when you compare them.  Barrel length?  Give me something to chew on here guys.  This is going to cost me a pretty penny by the time I am done.

Just buy the gun you want. If the 7mm Weatherby gives you that warm fuzzy feeling, then buy one.

Looks to me like the Weatherby has a 150-200 fps edge over the Rem Mag. That seems worth while. I'm sort of a gun hipster though and I hate having the same thing as the guy next to me. The Weatherby is less common than the 7mm Rem so I would probably get the Weatherby over the Rem.  Weatherby ammo is more expensive, but how often will you be shooting it? It sounds like you're a bow hunter looking to buy a rifle. You likely wont be shooting 200+ rounds every years. If you're only going to run 40-50 shots out of the gun every year then I wouldn't worry about ammo cost.

Get the Weatherby and be happy. They're very nice guns and the 7mm Weatherby is a great cartridge. I'd go for the 7mm-375 Ruger though. The Weatherby is too main stream.

Hey Jake, if you like the rifle, go for it. Sounds like you have history together, and confidence in that rifle. At the same time, dont pay and arm and a leg if you dont want to pay alot for it.  If you get the 7mm WYB, think hard about gathering brass and reloading. I think you will see very similar performance on game using a 7mm rem mag, they are deadly. I have taken game, and been with hunters that have taken game with the 7mm rem mag, and that cartridge flat works. That said, I have settled in over the years on the 270win, with great success, and less recoil, and better groups at the range. In closing, as far as getting meat on the table, you cant make a wrong choice between the 7mm wby, or the 7mm rem mag. Think about ammo availability and cost of new ammo if you are not a reloader before you buy the 7mm WBY. 7mm rem mag ammo is pretty much every where. Let us know what you get!

Having confidence in your rifle is valuable. That is a fine cartridge. Weatherbys generally have large cartridge cases which burn more powder than other calibers. More powder equals more velocity but also more recoil, and potentially shorter barrel life. There are very few companies other than Weatherby that produce Weatherby ammunition. A box of Weatherby ammunition will probably run you $80+. If you reload or only shoot a few boxes per year it should not be a large factor in your decision.

From what you have posted I would buy it if the price is right.

If the 7mm Weatherby is what you want, get it. There's certainly no disadvantage to it versus the Remington version, other than the cost of ammo. And there is the additional velocity, which while it's not a whole lot, it's about the same difference there is between a 308 Winchester and a 30/06, and most people consider the 30/06 to be a significant increase in performance over the 308.

The fact that you have already hunted with the 7mm Weatherby and obviously have great confidence in it, is the best reason of all to go with that cartridge.

As far as barrel length, I believe the Weatherby uses a 26 inch barrel, while the Remington is most often seen with a 24" barrel.

Recoil should be similar between the two cartridges.

If your dad has a wheatherby and you nhun t together then I''d go with the markv that way you guys could shoot the same ammo. A few years ago I went on a muledeer hunt in bc with lancaster out fitting . one of the  guys in our group had borrowed his sons 7mm . on day two we got him on a huge buck and he missed a 150 yard shot  (180 class deer ) . He was dejected . that night he had his rifle up on his bunk and I noticed his box of ammo he had a 7mm wheatherby  box of ammo and  the gun was a 7mm rem ( no wonder the bolt got stuck after the shot ).  The next day he used my  30-378 and smoked a buck at 300 yards . Thats why if the two of you hunt together i'd go with the samr caliber and ammo set up .

If you like it, I would say "Buy"...I buy more on want then need
If the price of brass/ammo doesn't bother you then I say go for it...A Barnes 140 or 150g TTSX out of that cartridge will "GET-ER -DUN"!

I agree with this completely. I always look at different rounds than the average joe shoots. My dad has been a weatherby fan since I was a kid. I read Roy weatherbys book as a kid in school and just always thought those cartridges  had cool history. I also reload though and weatherby ammo is definitely more expensive, kinda like your girlfriends coach purse, you're mostly paying for the name.

You have to get what you want, just as many have said here.  If you don't, the first time you miss an animal or that once in a lifetime shot, you will be kicking yourself saying "what if?"  You will have to develop an interest in relaoding or work with someone you have confidence in to do it right.  When you get to that point, I'd shoot 140 grain Accubond bullets and IMR-7828 powder.
