Mckinnly or Talon?????
« on: February 13, 2013, 08:11:40 PM »
So my truck got broken into last weekend and the scum walked off with my bino's after breaking my window out. I am looking into the Leupold BX 4  HD Mckinnley's and the Vortex Talon HD's. I have never been disappointed with Leupolds but the Talon HD seems to be a compeditive product for less money. What do you guys think? Is there another product in the $500 to $600 price range i should be looking at. I know i should get a pair of swaro's or leica's but i need a pair to get me by untill the budget allows. Any and all input would be helpfull.

Right off the top of my head, I'd say you'd have to bump up the Viper HD to get to the McKinley.  I'll get a McKinley from Leupold for review today or tomorrow, I'll post something about them when I can.

This is sort of an apples to oranges, and will get down to personal tastes as much as anything.  The Talon is open bridge, the Viper is closed bridge.  The Talon is bigger physically than the Viper.  The Talon has a lot bigger fov than the Viper.  That will mean more/less to some than others.  The centerfield resolution is close enough that it is a hard call.  The Viper had a little better edge, but it has to since it is so much narrower.

Having not yet seen the McKinley, my distinct impression it will be Gold Ring quality, but they are not yet doing an in house Gold Ring.  It will also likely cost more than $2k to do that quality level in house at the present, so the McKinley is being introduced as an upgrade to the Green River stuff.

Between the Talon HD & Viper HD there is no comparison! The Viper HD is a much better optic in every way. Once you use them you just might not be looking for another, they are that good! Too, they are well within your price range! PM me for a quote if you'd like.

Chuck I see where you are coming from but the viper's seem to be what they say they are. I relly want to go with a HD bino and I might jump on the Vortex wagon. You should look through a pair!
