New NE Washington Archery hunter
« on: June 25, 2013, 02:20:39 PM »
Hi all!!

Well, figured I'd introduce myself.  I haven't hunted since 1999!  Between 1985 and 1999 I rifle hunted, killing a deer each year and an elk in 98.  I taught my son how to rifle hunt and now it's time for him to teach his ol' man.  He's now an archery hunter and I've wanted to start.  Well, for Father's Day my children pooled their resources and bought me a compound bow!!  It's not new but it's a start!  I'm left handed and they purchased me a Matthews SQ2, completely set up.

I grew up near Newport and now live in Spokane.  My son loaned me his block target which I've set up in the back yard, which allows me 20-30 yards to practice.  So far, I'm feeling fairly confident though also fairly sore!

My son took me to my first 3D Shoot, outside Priest River, ID last weekend.  It was a 2 day shoot and we were only able to shoot Saturday but it was a blast!!

Be careful overshooting, good way to develop bad shooting habits because of sore or tired muscles.  Good luck!!

best of luck!  enjoy the addiction!   :chuckle:

if you're after more distance to shoot, look up Evergreen Archery Club.  we're out by SFCC of Government way.  80 yard flat range and a 28 target field range from 5-80 yards

5 minutes into the shoot, I could already see how addictive it could become!  Unfortunately, we were only able to shoot Saturday and only 2 loops.  We had to leave early to get the grandkids to the Newport Rodeo Parade.

best of luck!  enjoy the addiction!   :chuckle:

Hmmm, for some reason, I assumed it was out in the valley.  SFCC is about 5 minutes from my house!  Do you have to be a member to take advantage of the shooting range?

Spokane Valley Archery is a retail location, not a club, correct?  I'll have to look into the club again.  I looked a few days ago but the membership fees seemed very expensive, from what I remember.  Currently living on a somewhat fixed income, I'll need to consider it!

That SQ2 is a very good bow.  Might not hurt to make sure you are shooting with other folks watching you so you don't develop bad habits.  I got by punching the trigger for a lot of years before it got so bad I had to fix it. >:(

I never learned how to use my back to engage my trigger release when I started, I know now!  Make every shot a perfect shot from draw to your follow through.

That's exactly what I've been working on for the past week or so, though on my own.  When I'm in Newport son watches my form, or when he comes into Spokane to visit.  Unfortunately, most of it is in my backyard, on my own.

Well, here's some photos I thought I'd share.  It's time for me to aim at a different spot with each arrow...

Here's a group from yesterday at 30 yards...first 3 arrows of the day.

Here's today, from 20 yards, first 3 arrows of the day.

I've heard of people "Robbin Hooding" arrows and I've even seen one person do it...however, I figured it'd never happen to me.  Unfortunately, this almost new arrow is completely destroyed.  I haven't taken the 2 arrows apart yet to see if the other arrow is also destroyed.  I figured I'd ask opinions first.  Is there any chance that the second arrow is still good?  If so, I'll separate the two.  If not, I'll keep them together.

Great Shooting and welcome to Archery.  :hello:
Yes, your second arrow should be just fine, just make sure there is no frying around the tip. Normally a robin hood doesn"t hurt the second arrow. I have shot a bunch of them since I've been shooting and only once did I destroy the second arrow also because it was a straight carbon and it cracked, that one was years ago. Your shooting gold tips, so shouldn't be a problem at all.
Have a blast shooting, your in for years of enjoyment. :)
Archery is not just a sport to me it is my life long passion.:-)

Introducing the newest archer in our family, our 7 year old daughter, Madison!!

We picked up 2 Bear Brave 3 bows and a good bag target, all for $40.00, on Craigslist!  They definitely aren't the best bow but a great price for a starter!

LOL She's using Dad's release

love the kids involved!  Family membership at EAC is only $10 more...  :chuckle:

my daughter has been shooting with me since she was 2.  she's 6 now and does really well!  finished in 4th place at the snow shoot this year.  last group that came in bumped her from the trophy.  but she took it SO well and was SUCH a trooper, making the whole course with less-than-perfect weather.

While still a fluke, I did it again...

This time with the Hoyt Vectrix I purchased a couple days ago, at 20 yards.
