Winchester 94
« on: August 01, 2013, 01:51:33 PM »
My old man gave me his 1967 Winchester Model 94 30 WCF a few years back.  Its been his Deer rifle since new and has been thru the ringer and back.  Ive cleaned it up and gone thru it with a fine tooth comb.  My only question is what ammo it can handle.  Should I be worried about load size or can it handle whatever I throw at it?  I have yet to shoot it and really want to put a few down range with my dad.  Thoughts?

It should be fine with any 30-30 ammo you can buy at the store.

Any factory loaded ammo with roundnose bullets/flat tip bullets should be fine.  Those older 94's are awesome guns.  Congrats on getting it from your dad.

There are also new pointed bullets with rubber tips that are safe for lever action rifles.

Store bought 30-30 or handloads within spec. The action is strong enough. The barrels/chambers are fine for that cartridge. The only real difference between the pre-64's and your 1967 is the few MIM, (Metal Injection Molded), (post 64), parts that do not affect the strength of the action/chamber/barrel.

Thanks Guys.  I run leverevolution thru my Marlin 30 30.  Ill put a few of those thru the Win and see how it does.  Anyone know if I can tighten up the rear elevation sight.  It flips up and you can slide it up and down for different yardage.  It's supper loose and wont stay in place.

Again, thanks for the info.  The amount of collective knowledge, and willingness to share is awesome.

I had a Sears Winchester 94. Most accurate open sight gun I ever shot. I sold it when I thought I was moving to Thailand in 2002. Big mistake. It was a great gun.

So is the dovetail loose?  Or is it the kind that hinges up and down from the barrel?  If that's loose, I'd check with a gunsmith and see about getting a new pin for it.  If the dovetail is loose you might try a drop of super glue (small one).  Or, you could get a new sight/ramp.

I have a M94 that my grandpa gave to me, bought new in 1939 before he went to WWII.  It's a 25-35, complete with saddle ring and Lyman peep sight.

Even if you reload, I think a middle of the road charge should be fine for you.

ITs the kind that hinges up and down from the barrel.  When flipped up you can slide the sight up and down (vertically) to adjust for elevation.  It just wont stay up when I slide it up.  I thought about just pinching it tighter, but didn't want to tweek the entire sight.
